KENT STATE CONFERS HONORARY DEGREE UPON ALUMNUS WILLARD JENKINS

Kent State conferred a Doctor of Letters honorary degree to alumnus Willard Jenkins for his “extraordinary contributions in promulgating jazz music and its importance to American culture and in advancing Kent State University.”

  • Kent State University students, faculty, staff and community members gathered as they have for the past 54 years on the Kent Campus to remember the events surrounding May 4, 1970, when 13 seconds of rifle fire by a contingent of 28 Ohio National Guardsmen left four students dead, one permanently paralyzed, and eight others wounded during a student demonstration against the Vietnam War.

  • Birds flew overhead, black squirrels darted around and a cool, calm breeze swept across Risman Plaza on April 22 as dozens of organizations assembled their tables for Earth Fest, an interactive Earth Day event.  

  • Kent State University students exercised their freedom of speech rights on Tuesday, April 16, with opposing speakers appearing on campus the same day.

  • Kent State University’s School of Peace and Conflict Studies and School of Communication Studies has organized a panel discussion to talk about free speech and protest on campus to educate students about their rights and responsibilities.

Kent State Works

  • As founder and owner of Sky Quest aircraft management and charter company, Corey Head, ’98, knows that hiring other Kent State graduates is a wise investment in the future. Of the 75 employees on his staff, roughly half are Kent State graduates.  

  • While completing a two-month journalism fellowship in Arizona the summer after her college graduation, Anna Huntsman, ’19, found herself nostalgic for Ohio.

    “I was around a lot of people from all across the country,” she remembers. “They would ask me, ‘What’s so special about Ohio?’ and I would have this answer about the camaraderie, the sports, the work ethic. I just found myself having these answers of really missing my home.”

  • When it came time to pick a college, Moe Duffy knew two things for certain: she wanted to work with animals and she wanted to stay in Ohio. Kent State gave her both.

  • All eyes have been on Northeast Ohio the past several weeks as the Kent State University and The University of Akron’s men’s and women’s basketball teams battled it out for the MAC championship title. It wasn’t always such a bitter rivalry between these two Northeast Ohio legends, however. Just look at this old footage we found of Flash and Zippy bonding back in the day.

  • The Kent State women’s basketball team will play in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2002. Champions do so much on their own, just look at the stats. But this championship team is supported by its members, its coaches and the Kent State Community.

  • The Golden Flashes have made it to the NCAA tournament during a moment when women’s basketball is in the prime spotlight.
