Trip Report:  Ohio Celebration of Women in Computing (OCWIC 2011)

Posted Feb. 21, 2011

OCWIC might be over but the excitement of the past two days still remains! OCWIC 2011 was a great success. Two full cars left Kent State University Friday morning to bring 3 professors (Angela Guercio and Natalia Dragan from the Stark campus, and Gwenn Volkert from the Kent campus) and 6 students (Kristin Gang from the Stark campus, Swapna Kalidindi, Shruti Sanjay Jadhav, Tanvi Kulkarni, Liz Judd, Becca Bedell, and Sissy Li from the Kent campus) to join 180 computer science women from all over Ohio in the middle of the Mohican State Forest. Many activities were expecting us, activities that spanned from Friday afternoon Feb 18 until Saturday afternoon Feb 19.

Graduate and undergraduate students had to opportunity to listen to great research topics and inspiring talks from women, both from the industrial and academic area, who shared their experience as women in computer science and how they conquered their success thanks to their strong commitment. Students participated in presentations where they shared their research work and their ideas. They also participated in a poster competition where 3 winners received a paid trip to Portland Oregon where in November they will participate in the famous Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.  Sissy Li, a graduate student at the Kent Campus received honorable mention for her poster presentation “A Tree-based Framework for Difference Summarization”.

But that was not all! Students had the opportunity to learn tips about career opportunities, to collect information about grad schools, to get help in preparation of their resume, and to network (or should I say to “poken” thanks to the fun Poken gadget we received?). So many other activities were available but I have no space in this article to list them all!

Last but not least, we had great party time with music, games and fun activities accompanied by good food, lots of desserts, and great hospitality …. I can tell you we all went to bed very late! And it was all FREE!!! thanks to the support of many sponsors!!!! Do I sound excited? Well ... if you missed it this year I suggest you do not miss it next time. I hope to see you at OCWIC 2013!
