Abstract
Complex networks are vital part of our daily life, running the gamut from biocellular, ecological, and neurologicalsystems, to the World Wide Web, social networks, and economical and financial markets. A complex network
models a large system of elements (vertices) that are joined by non-trivial relationships (edges). The underlying
principles and laws of these network systems can help us construct more effective communication mechanisms,
find cures for fatal diseases, and deal with economic crises. A science that supports the understanding of these
models holds the potential, in a transformative manner, to revolutionize our understanding of these ubiquitous
complex systems. In the first part of my talk, I will give an introduction on the major problems and results in this
young and rapidly developing field. In the second part of my talk, I will overview some of the key challenges of managing
the network data, especially from the database perspective.
