Abstract

Complex networks are vital part of our daily life, running the gamut from biocellular, ecological, and neurological
systems, to the World Wide Web, social networks, and economical and financial markets. A complex network
models a large system of elements (vertices) that are joined by non-trivial relationships (edges). The underlying
principles and laws of these network systems can help us construct more effective communication mechanisms,
find cures for fatal diseases, and deal with economic crises. A science that supports the understanding of these
models holds the potential, in a transformative manner, to revolutionize our understanding of these ubiquitous
complex systems.  In the first part of my talk, I will give an introduction on the major problems and  results in this
young and rapidly developing field. In the second part of my talk, I will overview some of the key challenges of managing
the network data, especially from the database perspective.
