Kent State Psychology Professor Awarded for Neuropsychological Effects of Obesity and Heart Disease Research
John Gunstad, Ph.D., faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Kent State University since 2005, recently received an Outstanding Research and Scholar Award for his work on neuropsychological effects of obesity and heart disease.

Dr. Joshua Stacher assists The Carter Center in the Presidential elections in Egypt
Dr. Joshua Stacher, an expert in authoritarian governments, assisted the Carter Center in the Egyptian Presidential elections. He was interviewed by various media outlets on the Egyptian crises and is currently a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Ohio Third Frontier Awards $3 Million to Kent State University
The Ohio Third Frontier Commission has approved a $3 million award to Kent State University. The award is part of the more than $21 million in grants recommended by the commission through the Ohio Third Frontier Open Innovation Incentive and the Ohio Third Frontier Innovation Platform Program to support innovation activities in the state.

Kent State Students Experience Democracy in Action on Education-Abroad Trip to Germany
Fourteen Kent State University students recently traveled to Germany for a three-week education-abroad program. The students gained cultural, democratic and social experiences while learning a little bit more about themselves in the process.

Kent State Biological Sciences Professor Wins Award for Aquatic Ecosystems Research
Laura Leff, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Kent State University since 1994, recently received an Outstanding Research and Scholar Award for her work in microbial ecology of aquatic ecosystems with emphasis on bacterial ecology of streams and the responses of microorganisms to their environment.

New Interim Dean Named for Kent State’s Honors College
Kent State University Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Todd Diacon has announced that Donald Palmer, Ph.D., has been named interim dean of the Honors College. Palmer currently serves as professor in Kent State’s Department of Geology.

Kent State Researchers Examine Emotional Impact of Acting White Accusation
Acting white is an accusation faced by many black adolescents, and it is one of the most negative accusations a black adolescent can receive from another, according to a team of Kent State University researchers.
A recent study published in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders highlights the emotional implications of being on the receiving end of the acting white accusation. Kent State researchers who surveyed African-American adolescents in Northeast Ohio found higher levels of anxiety among those who had been accused of acting white.

Askat Dukenbaev selected for Charles & Kathleen Manatt Fellowship
Askat Dukenbaev (PhD candidate) was selected as a fellow of the Charles & Kathleen Manatt Democracy Studies Fellowship at IFES in Washington D.C. for the summer of 2012. The fellowship provided Askat an opportunity to conduct research at IFES’ F. Clifton White Applied Research Center for Democracy and Elections (ARC), and have the benefit of mentorship from IFES’ international election and democracy experts. Congratulations to Askat!

Dr. Mark Cassell takes his graduate course in Urban Politics to Cleveland. The students in the course were briefed by David Beach, the executive director of Green City on a Blue Lake, Chris Ronayne, President of University Circle Incorporate, the directors of Cleveland's Planning Department and Community Development Department, and city planner Marka Fields.

Kent State Selected to Host Fulbright Visiting Scholars This Summer
Kent State University is one of five institutions selected to host the 2012 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq this summer. The prestigious program is sponsored by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars and supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

Ohio Third Frontier Approves $200,000 in Commercialization Grants to Kent State Researchers
The Ohio Third Frontier program recently made three separate grants to Kent State University researchers through the newly established Technology Validation and Start-up Fund, which promotes the commercialization of Ohio technologies developed by the state’s institutions of higher education.
