What’s happening in the Middle East? Syndicated columnist gives an insider’s perspective for Cleveland audiences
Recent Arab uprisings in the Middle East raise questions about the region’s stability and future. The editor-at-large for the Beirut-based Daily Star, and internationally syndicated columnist and author, Rami Khouri will engage Cleveland-area audiences in a discussion and dialogue about these events when he gives two free, public talks as the guest speaker in the new series, sponsored by the Northeast Ohio Consortium for Middle East Studies.

Speak Peace Appears at University of Arizona Poetry Center
David Hassler, director of the Wick Poetry Center, recently visited the University of Arizona Poetry Center in Tucson, Arizona, where the Speak Peace exhibit was on display. Kent State’s African Community Theatre Holds Auditions for Fall Production, Sept. 29-30
The African Community Theatre at Kent State University will be holding auditions for its 2011-2012 season production of “Stagolee: A Black Folktale.” This ensemble production captures the folklore of African-Americans interspersed with music, song and dance.

New Grant funded to LCI Theory Group
Professors Robin Selinger and Jonathan Selinger have been awarded a new grant from the National Science Foundation, Division of Materials Research. The project is entitled, "Topological Defects, Curved Geometries, and Shape Evolution in Soft Matter."

His lecture, titled “Saharan Jewry: History, Memory and the Politics of Identity,” takes place Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. in room 214 of Oscar Ritchie Hall.

Kent State Dedicates New Math Emporium on Sept. 13
Members of the Kent State University community will gather Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the new Kent State University Math Emporium, a state-of-the-art computerized learning center designed to help students learn math. Located on the second floor of the Kent State University Library, the Math Emporium launched this fall with the start of classes on Aug. 29.

Kent State’s Summer Boot Camp A Success
Before attending the summer remediation program, Boot Camp, math was student Tammy Moore’s most difficult subject. Upon entering the program this year, she took the University’s assessment test, COMPASS, and then spent eight weeks working on a computerized program called ALEKS.
