Program Restrictions and Requirements

Program Restrictions  

  • Students must have at or near 60 credit hours before an official BIS Evaluation is completed.
  • Students who have already earned a baccalaureate degree are not eligible to pursue the BIS degree.
  • BIS may not be combined with another major or field of concentration;
    • However, minors and certificate programs are strongly encouraged.
  • BIS students may NOT elect coursework on a pass-fail basis.
    • (However, BIS students MAY choose courses that are graded S/U because of catalog or departmental classification.)

General Concentration restrictions

  • Must consist of three programs, one of which must be in A&S.
  • No more than 18 hours within a single academic program may be used.
  • At least 15 BIS hours must be from College of Arts and Sciences programs, 9 of which must be upper division. 
  • At least half of the 30 BIS hours must be new courses, resulting from the approved proposal program 
    • (Only 15 hours allowed from previously completed Kent State coursework).

Integrative Studies –Three Minors restrictions

A minimum of one minor must be housed in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Program Requirements 

Requirements for the BIS degree are listed in the Undergraduate Catalog. The requirements listed below are based upon the current (2013) catalog - new KSU students must satisfy requirements current at the time of admission to the University or at declaration into a degree program. See a BIS advisor for specifics requirements and restrictions relative to your catalog year. 

  • Completion of 121 semester hours of applicable coursework 
  • Completion of 42 upper division hours (30000/ 40000 level) 
  • Completion of Kent Core Requirements  
  • Completion of one Writing-Intensive Course (WIC) with a grade of “C” or better 
  • Completion of the Experiential Learning requirement
  • Completion of the Diversity requirement
  • Achievement of at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA in all KSU coursework
  • Normal college credit limitations apply to PEB, workshop and other non-traditional coursework.
  • Completion of the approved coursework plan (proposal) for the General or Three Minors concentration.
