A solid foundation is essential when building an excellent structure. And right now, Kent State University is experiencing one of the most exciting structural transformations in its history.
The Kent State Foundations of Excellence initiative is working toward building the future. The initiative's focus is the construction of new buildings, facility upgrades and establishing dynamic, new spaces. The goal is to create the best possible academic experience for students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as our communities.
In recent years, Kent State has been widely recognized as one of the world's finest public research universities and as an institution that is helping Northeast Ohio compete and thrive. In addition, the university is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth, and our facilities must be able to accommodate larger enrollments and expanding institutional goals. As we look to the future, our academic community is committed to maintaining – and raising – the high standards of scholarship and service we have set for ourselves. Foundations of Excellence is a major initiative that will transform the Kent campus into everything a modern, world-class campus should be.
Projects that Need Your Support:
A new facility for the students in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) will consolidate programs in one location; provide spaces for interactions and collaborations between students, faculty and staff; and create fabrication spaces for researching and exploring construction methods and systems. The planned location (along the new Esplanade extension) is designed to energize the surrounding business district and increase student traffic in this new section of the Kent State Campus. Groundbreaking for this project is tentatively scheduled for November 2014.
The new Center for the Visual Arts (CVA) will combine two existing buildings: Van Deusen Hall and the Art Annex/Power House. Repurposed and new construction will unify the college's studio, classroom and gallery spaces, currently located in various buildings across campus, under one roof for the first time in over 50 years. The facility includes more than 126,000 square-feet of space that will provide access to the range of media, resources and expertise that have distinguished the college for tradition, innovation and technologies. Groundbreaking for this project is underway.
Construction of a new multidisciplinary research facility in the Science Mall will enhance the university's ability to maintain high-quality faculty, attract grants and conduct vital research. Groundbreaking for this project is tentatively scheduled for May 2014.
Technology is a discipline in which state-of-the-art facilities are essential to providing optimum academic experiences. In order to provide greatly improved facilities for the College of Applied Engineering, Sustainability and Technology, and plan for future growth, a new building will be designed to include empty shelled areas to accommodate expansion. Groundbreaking for this project has just begun.
These exciting developments mirror the innovative projects underway in the city of Kent (including the award-winning Town-Gown initiative). When our capital plans are realized, we will know that Kent State was part of an investment in the future totaling nearly $800 million; helped create nearly 1,000 jobs; and improved the quality of life in Northeast Ohio.
