Institute for African American Affairs (IAAA)


The Institute for African American Affairs, a segment of the Department of Pan-African Studies, complements the unit's academic activities in providing practical support for the development of research/ scholarship opportunities and innovative teaching methods. The institute facilitates interactions between the Department of Pan-African Studies and the northeastern Ohio community, as well as encourages links between the department and other parts of Kent State University's campus. Additionally, the institute:

  • Sponsors colloquia and speakers representing the black artistic and intellectual community
  • Plans and hosts conferences on the black experience and the contributions African people have made towards the development of world culture
  • Supports the Communication Skills and Arts programs and the African American Affairs practicum, which places students in community-based institutions and projects Provides students interested in becoming Pan-African Studies teachers and scholars with valuable experience and training
  • Facilitates teacher and student exchanges with cooperating institutions throughout the Diaspora and the African continent.
