Selective Requirements

Programs with Special Admission Criteria/Deadlines

The following areas of study have admission criteria higher than or different from the criteria described in the New Freshmen "Admission Requirements" section of this Web site.

Applicants who are not admissible to these selective programs but who are otherwise admissible to Kent State can request consideration for another area of study. Students who continue to desire to complete a program in one of these selective areas may, after completing the appropriate coursework with the necessary academic performance at Kent State, request a change of major.

Aeronautics

Entry into the aeronautics programs requires at least a 2.5 cumulative high school grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

Architecture

Application Deadline: Jan. 31
To be considered, freshmen need at least a 3.0 cumulative high school grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), a minimum ACT composite score of 25 (1140 combined critical reading+math SAT score), minimum ACT sub scores of 25 in both English and math, AND a rank in the top 20 percent of their graduating class. Enrollment is limited to ninety freshmen each fall.

B.S./M.D.

Six-Year Medical Program
Application Deadline: Dec. 15
In conjunction with the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM),Kent State offers a six-year medical program leading to both the bachelor of science and medical degrees. This program is highly selective and includes interviews of semifinalists before final selections are made. More than 600 applications are submitted;thirty-five students are chosen. Special B.S./M.D. applications can be obtained by calling the Admissions Office at NEOUCOM at 1-800-686-2511 (in Ohio) or 330-325-2511.

Dance

Students must audition before being admitted to the dance program. Inquiries can be directed to the Dance Coordinator, 266 MACC Annex, Kent State University, P.O.Box 5190, Kent, OH 44242-0001 (or call 330-672-2069).

Education

To qualify for a teacher education program, freshman applicants must have at least a 2.75 cumulative high school grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum ACT composite score of 21 (980 SAT combined critical reading+math score) OR a 2.75 cumulative high school grade point average and all 16 of the recommended college preparatory units (see the New Freshmen "Admissions Requirements" section for a list of these units).

Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising

Freshman applicants must have at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) AND a minimum ACT composite score of 21 (or an SAT combined critical reading+math score of 980).

Interior Design

Students are admitted to interior design based on a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) AND a minimum ACT composite score of 22 (1020 SAT combined critical reading+math score).

Music

Nursing

Admission to pre-nursing requires the completion of high school math, biology, and chemistry. In addition, students should have at least a 2.7 cumulative high school grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) AND minimum ACT composite and science reasoning scores of 22 (or an SAT combined critical reading+math score of 1020). Students with an ACT composite score of 21 (SAT combined critical reading+math score of 980) need a 2.9 high school grade point average; those with an ACT composite score of 20 (SAT combined critical reading+math score of 940) need a 3.3 cumulative high school grade point average.

Sport Administration

Those students who have a 2.75 high school cumulative grade point average and a 21 ACT score or 980 SAT combined critical reading and math score are admitted to the sport administration major.

Theatre

Applicants must audition to be admitted to a concentration area in the School of Theatre and Dance. Inquiries can be directed to the Theatre Coordinator, B-141 Music and Speech, Kent State University, P.O. Box 5190, Kent, OH 44242-0001 (or call 330-672-2082).

Visual Communication Design

Enrollment in the freshman visual communication design courses is limited. Early applicants and those with strong academic credentials will be given preference.

Honors College

Students from any major may seek admission to the Honors College. Selective criteria include high school grade point average, class rank, ACT or SAT scores, college preparatory curriculum, and evidence of creative ability. To be considered for membership in the Honors College and for merit scholarships, you must submit a complete Kent State admissions application by Jan. 15, 2010.
