History

  1. Kent State University Airport reported to be one of the first airports in the state of Ohio. First used as an enroute landing field by pilots ferrying World War I Jennys to otherparts of the United States from Canada.
  2. Airport opens to the public under the name of StowAviation Field.
  3. Al T. Simmons and Hugh Robbins form Robbins FlyingService.
  4. Robbins Flying Service built a small service hangar whichis today part of the Maintenance hangar. During the early1930s, such notable flyers as Charles Lindbergh, FloydBennet and Eddie Rickenbacker flew from the field.
  5. Rudy VanDevere purchased the farm land that facilitatesthe airport. Airport became known as Stow Field.
  6. Kent State University purchased the airport from RudyVanDevere then leased back the airport to RayVanDevere. Stow Field renamed Kent State UniversityAirport.
  7. Large Army surplus aircraft hangar was constructed and the present Aerospace Technology program was startedduring the 1947 school year.
  8. North-South runway paved and a 14 unit "T" Hangar wasconstructed.
  9. Airfield named Andrew W. Paton Field in honor of theprofessor who taught the University's first aerospacecourse in 1947.
  10. Constructed North end of the North-South parallel taxiway.
  11. Constructed South end of the North-South parallel taxiway.Constructed Southern runway extension (60').
  12. Visual Approach Slope Indicators landing guidancesystem installed.
  13. North-South runway extended from 3065' to 3950'.
  14. Aircraft parking ramp/apron expanded to 120' by 360'.Construct final 50' section of North-South runway makingit 4,000' in length.
  15. Airport runway, taxiway, ramp/apron resurfaced.
