Koon-Hwee Kan

Associate Professor

Koon Hwee is an associate professor in the art education division at the School of Art. She coordinates the Saturday Art Program, a 10-week outreach program for children in the community.

Koon moved to Ohio after receiving her doctoral degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign–Urbana in 2003. Her doctoral research, an ethnographic case study entitled A Story Told Visually: The Singapore Secondary School Art Style was a co-winner of the 2006 Dissertation Award from the American Educational Researcher Association, Arts and Learning Special Interest Group. She also received the Marilyn Zurmuehlen Award for Distinguished Research in Art Education from the National Art Education Association in 2007. Her current research interests include adolescent artistic learning in the context of formal schooling, distance and continuing education for art educators through interactive technology, intercultural and transcultural education, and preservice art teacher education as well as qualitative methodology, especially visual narrative inquiry. She has made numerous scholarly presentations locally at Kent and regionally, nationally, and internationally, and has published more than 10 research papers in the following journals:  Art Education, Arts and Learning Journal, International Journal of Education and the Arts, Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education, Studies in Art Education, and Visual Arts Research. Her favorite art mediums include mixed medium watercolor and digital photocollage-cum-essay. During spring semester of 2011, Koon will go on sabbatical leave to conduct research for her book, Playful Mindfulness: How Artists and Artisans Embody Meanings with Life (藝術家體現生命的用心).
