For its students, both current and future, its alumni and its many friends, the School of Art continues to explore ideas, provide the highest standards of craft, and stimulate individual and collective creativity through its programs, curriculum, and exhibitions.

CONGRATULATIONS to

Mark Mothersbaugh

Mark Mothersbaugh receives doctoral hood from KSU President Lester Lefton at commencement ceremonies, 10 May, 2008.

School of Art printmaking alumnus and recipient of a KSU Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the 10 May, 2008, commencement ceremony!  Notice of this award also appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education on 23 May, page A6.

 

CONGRATULATIONS to emeritus painting professor Craig Lucas, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cleveland Arts Prize on 25 June.   MFA alumna Hildur Jonsson also received a prize, the Mid-Career Artist Award.

CONGRATULATIONS to
emeritus Professor (Glass program) Henry Halem who in June received the lifetime achievement award from the international Glass Art Society (GAS), at their annual meeting in Portland, OR.

BOTCH UP!  A temporary participant-driven

drawing and painting exhibititon in the School of Art Gallery!

Open to School of Art faculty and graduate/undergraduate students (undergraduates must have completed Drawing 3, 4, or 5 or be currently enrolled in one of those classes). 

Bring materials on Wednesday, 24 September, between 11-5pm, to make work or work-in-progress or finished work.  Coffee and donuts served during the open-draw reception, Friday, 26 September, 12-2pm. 

For the duration of the show, you may continue to hang or make work during normal gallery hours (Tues.-Fri. 11-5pm).  Be prepared to hang or pin work yourself.  Come and have fun, get acquainted with the space and with your colleagues, fellow students and teaching staff.

All-School Scholarships

All continuing students  (beyond first semester) are eligible to apply.

IN OUR GALLERIES...

Mercer Forms, an exhibition of work donated by celebrated ceramist Toshiko Takaezu to the School of Art in recognition of the contributions of Professor Kirk Mangus and Adjunct Professor Eva Kwong, of the ceramics program at KSU, opened on 27 May in the Michener Gallery on the second floor of the KSU Library. The exhibition continues through 24 October, 2008.

Want to know where/how to vote in the November elections?

On Tuesday, 23 September, 2-5pm, an information table across from 217 Art will be staffed to answer your questions and provide the forms you need, whether you are registering to vote for the first time, wanting to change your registration in order to vote in Kent, or planning to vote absentee. 

 

Professor Janice Lessman-Moss and advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumnae, in the fiber/textiles program recently completed a tapestry for the 2008 Wendy's International Update meeting inSan Antonio. Woven on the TC-1 digital jaquard hand loom, the 53" x 78" tapestry was completed on 9 September as the weaving process was filmed for presentation during the San Antonio meeting.

"We are Wendy's" involved lead weaver and team leader Robin Haller (MFA KSU and Adjunct Professor), second weaver Melissa McCourtie (MA degree candidate) and team members Cathy Theodore, Loren Marshall-Flynn. Martine Peters, Katie Rothacher (all pictured above), as well as Rumana Hawa.   The finished tapestry will be acutioned at the corporate meeting, with proceeds going to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

ELSEWHERE ON VIEW

Adjunct Professor Eva Kwong's "Noetic Moments" opened 5 September at the William Busta Gallery, 2731 Prospect Ave., Cleveland. The exhibition, which has a catalogue appreciation by Galleries Director Anderson Turner,runs through 11 October; Professor Kwong will be in the gallery on Saturday, 4 October from 2-4pm.

The 2008 Autumn Invitational Ceramics Exhibition at Baldwin-Wallace College includes work by Professors Kirk Mangus and Eva Kwong, as well as Diana Bjel, Sandra Byers, Winthrop Byers, Fong Choo, and Yumiko Goto.  The show runs from 5 September through 10 October in the Fawick Gallery, Kleist Center for Art and Drama, 95 East Bagley Road, Berea, OH.
