"WaveMakers": 2010 Intriguing New Art Show 1

Arts-Informed Research/Videoconference/Visual Interpretation/Exhibition

A series of cultural exchange activities between the students of Kent State University and Hebei Normal University (China) pays homage to 20 extraordinary individuals who have made a difference in the contemporary arts of China and the USA (1910-2010). Rigorous research in the arts and a videoconference that took place on March 9, 2010, informed and guided participating students at both universities to create their visual interpretations of the Wave-Makers’ profile and contributions. The series of events increased and intensified the communication and idea exchange between art students of both universities and also aimed to expand their international exposure while deepening their understanding of the arts in respective culture.

The names of 20 Wave-Makers featured in the exhibition at Music Listening Center of the KSU Student Center (main campus) from 21-30 April 2010 appear below.

  • Guan Pinghu—A music composer whose version of “Liu Shui†was launched by NASA into space with the Voyager spacecraft on the Voyager Golden Record;
  • Pan Yuliang—An orphan sold to a brothel as a child who later became the first Easterner/ female Chinese artist to be accepted at the Rome National Art Academy in Italy in 1925; and
  • Xu Shichang—A multitalented politician, who was a painter, a calligrapher, a poet, and the President of the Republic of China (Beijing government) from 1918 to 1922.
