The workshops are offered over 3 weeks. You may sign up for one, two, or three credits during one, two, or three weeks.
Workshop 1: Engaging Meaningfully with Art
Meeting Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons the week of July 12, this workshop will explore strategies art educators can use when engaging themselves and their students meaningfully with art. We will examine art criticism and aesthetics strategies applicable to PK â€“ 12 settings. Particular attention will be paid to works of Ohio artists as well as contemporary works of art alongside visual culture forms.
Workshop 2: Reaching All Students
Meeting Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons the week of July 19, this workshop
will focus on ways art educators can be successful with all students, building inclusive, humanistic, and culturally relevant curricula. Three areas that commonly challenge teachersâ€™ practice are: special needs (as related to differently-abled students), multi- and intercultural education and culturally responsive pedagogy, and discipline/classroom management. We will examine these three areas of challenge through interactive and praxis-oriented strategies that are applicable in PK-12 settings and beyond.
Workshop 3: Making Meaningful Connections
Meeting Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons the week of July 28, this workshop will focus on the latest research on brain-based learning and design education. Teaching strategies for the instruction of design will focus on developing lessons dealing with architecture, fashion, car design, playgrounds, and interactive books. Particular attention will be paid to the state and national standards and offering suggestions on how to advocate for the importance of teaching art and design, to the administration, school board, and parents.
