Posted Jan. 17, 2013

Porthouse 2013 Season BrochurePorthouse Theatre, Kent State's outdoor, summer theatre, located on the grounds of Blossom Music Center, announces its 2013 season of musicals. The professional theatre will present South Pacific, Working and Fiddler on the Roof.

South Pacific, the first production, directed by artistic director Terri Kent, is a Broadway musical set on a tropical island during World War II, which tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices. The beloved score's songs include "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," "This Nearly Was Mine" and "There is Nothin' Like a Dame." Music is by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. This musical, based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific, runs June13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 at 8 p.m. and June 16 and 23 at 2 p.m.

The second production is Working, based on the book by Studs Terkel and adapted by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso. This new 2010 version of Working is a musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life. While most of the professions have been updated, the strength of the show is in the core truths that transcend specific professions; the key is how people's relationships to their work ultimately reveal key aspects of their humanity, regardless of the trappings of the job itself. Directed by Jim Weaver, Working runs July 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11,12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 at 8 p.m. and July 7 and 14 at 2 p.m.

The season closes with Fiddler on the Roof, directed by associate artistic director for Porthouse Theatre Eric van Baars. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. The universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. With book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler on the Roof is based on Sholem Aleichem's stories by special permission of Arnold Perl. The show will run July 25, 26, 27, 30, 31 at 8 p.m., Aug. 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9,10, at 8 p.m. and July 28 and Aug. 4, 10, 11 at 2 p.m.
