Graduate Programs in Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences at Kent State University offers Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Cell Biology, Ecology, and Physiology. We also offer an innovative coursework-based Master of Arts (MA) degree. Students interested in the MS and PhD programs have the opportunity to engage in research with internationally recognized faculty. In addition to our more biomedical research-based programs in Cell Biology and Physiology, students interested a degree in Biomedical Sciences can apply to graduate school through the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Additional Program Information and Admission Requirements:
Admissions into our MS and PhD programs are competitive. Since these programs are full-time, financial support is necessary. Financial support from the department comes in the form of teaching or research assistantships. Student-provided support includes scholarships, such as Fulbright Grants. **Students do not have to have a MS degree to apply into our PhD programs**

Departmental teaching/research assistantships include:
- A full tuition waiver
- Annual stipend
- Money towards the purchase of health insurance
Travel money to conferences
Training in research ethics
Access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities
- Domestic applications must be completed by January 1st, 2014
- International applications must be completed by December 15th, 2013
While we do look at each application in its totality, the following information can be used as a guide to help determine if your application is competitive:
- Average GRE scores over the past 5 years have been:
- 67th percentile on the verbal section
- 67th percentile on the quantitative section
- 45th percentile on the writing section
- The average GPA over the past 5 years has been:
- 3.56 (a minimum of a 3.0 is required by the University)
Our MA program has rolling admissions; though, applications need to be completed at least one month prior to the start of the semester in which you want to start taking classes.
The MA program is a course-based degree and is an excellent option for students interested in career advancement. This degree can be pursued either full-time or part-time. More details about this program can be found at here.
