Undergraduate Awards

Every year, the Department of Biological Sciences offers "in house" scholarships and awards to recognize our biology major's achievements in academia. Please watch for announcements at the beginning of the fall semester of when the application cycle opens. Please see below for all the present awards being offered and their description of criteria. UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS:

 

Dorcas J. Anderson Faculty Scholarship Award      


Sponsored by Dr. Dorcas J. Anderson, Emeritus Professor, award is given to the student majoring in zoology who has evidenced superior scholarship and academic achievement.  GPA 3.5 overall.

 

Biological Sciences Pre-Medicine Award      

Awarded to the senior student majoring in biological sciences who has evidenced superior scholarship and academic achievement in pre-medical studies.  BSI Biology or Zoology major.  GPA 3.5 overall and 3.5 in major.

 

Ralph W. Dexter Faculty Scholarship Award            

In honor of Dr. Ralph W. Dexter, Emeritus professor of biological sciences, this award is given to the senior student majoring in biology who has evidenced superior scholarship and academic achievement.  GPA 3.5 overall.

 

Judith Koonce Memorial Award         

Awarded to the outstanding graduating biological sciences major based on enthusiasm for biology as demonstrated by activities beyond formal coursework, leadership ability, and academic record.  BSCI degree; GPA 3.5 overall preferred, but not necessary.  Additional – enthusiasm for BSCI and extramural biology activities.

 

Louis and Eva Margolis Commemorative Award In Physiology Award         

Sponsored by Robert Margolis, M.D. (BA 1971) in honor of his parents.  This award is given to the senior student majoring in biological sciences who has evidenced overall superior scholarship and academic achievement and has distinguished himself/herself in physiology.  BS in ay BSCI degree.  GPA 3.25 overall.  Additional – have taken 2 physiology lab courses, desire to enter graduate or professional school.

 

James Rinier Conservation Scholarship        

Full-time undergraduate student who is a conservation major and who is in junior or senior standing; must have a GPA of 3.5 in major and 3.0 overall; must be a US citizen.

 

Hobbs Scholarship     

Recipient should be pursuing a baccalaureate or graduate degree in Biology or Botany, preferably with an interest in green plants.  The scholarship will be awarded according to academic merit and financial need.  The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA.  Preference will be given to non-traditional, full-time female student at least 30 years old.  The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years.

 

Cooke and Andreas Scholarship in Biological Sciences       

Awarded to an undergraduate majoring in Biology, Plant Sciences or Conservation and attending Kent campus. 

Preference to be given to students from high schools in  Hocking County (first), Sugarcreek, OH (second), or from the following Ohio counties (third): Athens, Belmont, Columbiana, Coshocton, Gallia, Gernsey, Harrison, jackson, Jefferson, Lawrence, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Vinton and Washington. 

If there are no applicants available who meet these geographic criteria, the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee in the Unit may then select a student based on academic criteria. 

Minimum high school or undergraduate 3.25 Overall GPA; minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major; Award is renewable up to four years with maintenance of criteria.


Dr. Harold R. Papiska Scholarship     

This award is presented to an undergraduate student with a junior or senior class level majoring in Biological Science. This student has demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals.

 

Dr. & Mrs. Robert W. Squires Scholarship Award    

Awarded to an undergraduate student studying environmental microbiology, biotechnology, or similar field with preference given to biotechnology major.  Recipient must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Fund shall be directed to tuition.
