Financial Support

Qualified students are offered full financial support in the form of research or graduate assistantships. The School offers 12-month graduate appointments on a competitive basis. The stipend for doctoral students is up to $23,000/year and these students also receive a tuition waiver and subsidized health insurance. Awards may be renewed annually for up to five years, if the student remains in good academic standing and is progressing with the dissertation work. Normally, a graduate assistantship requires some service to the University, most commonly in the form of teaching laboratory classes. Of course, this enhances the curriculum vitae.

In order to be considered for support, make this request on the application form for admission to the School of Biomedical Sciences. Also, please be aware that the admission decision and the funding decision are separate issues and that not all admitted students are awarded funding, due to budget restraints.

Cost of Living

The cost of living is relatively low in Kent, making the stipends especially rewarding. The same is true for students who chose to study and reside in the Rootstown area, where the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy are located. Although the cost of living may be more in Cleveland, where the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic is, it is still quite reasonable, making the stipends attractive to our students.

Fellowships

University Fellowships are available to late-stage students. The fellowship provides the student with release from service duties, in order to allow the student time to prepare the dissertation. Walter C. Adams Fellowships are offered to incoming students with superior credentials. These fellowships provide $2,000 to aid in relocation to the Kent area. Both fellowships are fine additions to a curriculum vitae.
