Dr. Lowell Zurbuch Associate ProfessorThe Society of Manufacturing Engineers
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is the world's leading professional society advancing manufacturing knowledge and influencing more than half a million manufacturing practitioners annually. It promotes an increased awareness of manufacturing engineering and keeps manufacturing professionals up to date on leading trends and technologies. The KSU student chapter has projects, field trips and related activities that further their understanding of manufacturing in an industrial setting. The chapter has an ongoing project in which they modify microwave ovens so they can be used to melt metals. This project provides real world examples of continual improvement, teamwork, leadership, and manufacturing techniques. In addition, it is a source of revenue that is used to fund the chapter. Finally, there is an annual scholarship that is given to a KSU technology student that is also an active member of the Kent chapter of the SME.
