CLEP (College-Level Examination Program)


The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on examinations accepted at Kent State. Earn credit for knowledge you've acquired through independent study, prior course work, on-the-job training, professional development, cultural pursuits, or internships.

Information and Fees

Schedule a CLEP test date at our Online Registration Site for CLEP tests administered at the Kent Campus in the Career Services Center. An email confirmation will be sent within 5-10 minutes of registration. A minimum wait of six months is required before repeating an examination.

Students are required to submit two separate payments for each test as follows: 

  • One payment to KSU for $35.00. This fee must be paid online at the time of registration.  Follow the link in the email confirmation to make this non-refundable, and non-transferable fee payment.
  • One payable to CLEP for $80.00.  The CLEP fee is paid on the day of the exam.  Each CLEP test requires an individual fee payment. Fees may be paid by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover) or check. Do not combine test fees for multiple tests, even if they are taken on the same day.
    • Identification Policy

    Students must present two forms of personal identification  in order to be admitted to a CLEP testing room.  All funded military candidates must present a current military ID and a second form of government-issued ID.  If you fail to present appropriate ID, you will not be tested.

    Acceptable forms of primary identification (original, government-issued photo ID with signature) are:

    • Current state-issued driver's license
    • Current state-issued ID card
    • Current passport
    • Tribal ID card
    • Naturalization card or certificate of citizenship

    Acceptable forms of secondary identification (with photo or signature) are:

    • Current student ID card
    • Original social security card
    • Military ID
    • Unused ID from the primary choices above
    Score Reports and Receiving Credit

    CLEP examination results are available immediately after the test via a candidate score report (except College Composition due to essay scoring which may take up to four weeks). Check this score report and the KSU cut-off to determine if you will receive credit.

    • If you indicated Kent State as a score recipient (KSU Code Number 1367), Career Services will receive an official score report (approximately two weeks after the test) and determine your credit based on the cut-off scores listed.

      The score report will be submitted to the Transfer Center for inclusion with your official academic record, and any credit earned will be posted to your transcript. No indication will be made on your transcript for non-passing scores.

    • CLEP credit earned will not be posted to your Kent State academic record until after you have enrolled in coursework at Kent State University.

    • Students who take CLEP exams at another institution must request that their scores be sent to Kent State in order for credit to be posted to their Kent State transcript.

    CLEP vs. Credit by Exam

    CLEP (nationally administered tests) and Credit by Exam (tests administered by academic departments at Kent State) both provide a way for students to demonstrate college-level achievement and/or proficiency in coursework through testing.

    Credit earned by either test option will be posted to the student's academic transcript as credit hours, without a grade, and will not be computed in the GPA. 

    Not all Kent State courses are available for credit through testing.
