Passing of OBR Distinguished Professor Yuri BreitbartPosted Jun. 13, 2010
The Department of Computer Science mourns the loss of OBR Distinguished Professor of Computer Science Yuri Breitbart, who passed away peacefully last night.
Dr. Breitbart received his MS Mathematics degree from Moscow Pedagogical Institute, and his D.Sc. in Computer Science from the Israel Technological Institute (TECHNION). In a career spanning 35 years, he taught at the TECHNION, SUNY Albany, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Kentucky. He worked in industry at Amoco, the Swiss Institute of Technology, and Bell Laboratories.
In 2002, the newly-formed Computer Science Department at Kent State University was fortunate to hire him away from Bell Labs as an Ohio Board of Regents (OBR) Distinguished Professor. His research was broad, spanning the areas of distributed database systems, transaction management, distributed file systems, network protocols, network management systems, and medical informatics.
Yuri was notable for his kind demeanor, wise advice, and tireless mentorship. He will be greatly missed.
UPDATE regarding the memorial service:
A memorial service for Dr. Yuri Breitbart will be held at 2pm on Sunday 20 June in the Cohn Jewish Student Center at Kent State.
The Cohn Jewish Student Center is a white two-stoy building located at 613 East Summit Street, Kent OH 44240, which is the northwest corner of East Summit Street and Terrace Drive. The Cohn Center is in front of a large water tower, and is across Terrace Drive from Kent State's Business Administration Building. Parking at the Cohn Center is limited, but you can park across Terrace Drive at the Business Administration Building.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland (http://www.jewishcleveland.org/page.aspx?id=204379) or the Anti-Defamation League (http://www.adl.org/donations.asp?s=topmenu)
Following the service, the family will host a light "dairy" meal (without meat products) at the Cohn Center.
