Journalism School at Kent State University Places in Top 10 of National Competition
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University finished in eighth place in the overall national championship of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program. The school also earned seventh place rankings in both the photojournalism and multimedia categories.

Kent State Student Designers Earn National Honors in Two Prestigious Competitions
Students in the Master of Fine Arts program in the School of Visual Communication Design (VCD) at Kent State University earned Student Notable Honoree status, placing them in the top six of all national entries, in the Core77 2013 Design Awards for their Healthcare Visuals Kibera project. This is the second award the team has earned this month, with Metropolis Magazine naming it runner-up in its Next Generation Design Competition.

Photo-Illustration Program Earns Accreditation from National Association of Schools of Art and Design
At its spring 2013 meeting, the Commission on Accreditation of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) granted Final Approval for Listing for the Bachelor of Sciences in Photo-Illustration degree program in the School of Visual Communication Design (VCD) at Kent State University.

Kent State Public Relations Students Place Second in National Competition
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) named a team of Kent State University students as the second-place finisher in the national PRSSA 2013 Bateman Case Study Competition. The team consisted of five Kent State seniors majoring in public relations, and its team name was KSU Blue. The announcement was made May 10.

Best of Show: JMC Photographers Take Top Honors at ONPA Contest
JMC student photojournalists and photojournalism instructors won 12 awards – including Best of Show – last week at the Ohio News Photographers Association’s (ONPA) 2012 annual contest, making 2012-2013 the most award-winning year for JMC’s photojournalism program in the last 30 years. JMC photojournalists have already won significant awards in the Hearst, College Photographer of the Year and Society of Professional Journalists competitions.

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University will honor 10 of its top alumni and dozens of outstanding students at events in Kent and Columbus this spring. The Celebration of Alumni and Student Success will take place on Tuesday, April 30, at the SLIS site in the State Library of Ohio in Columbus, and on Wednesday, May 1, at the Kent Student Center on the Kent Campus. Events in both locations start at 6 p.m. and are open to all; there is no charge to attend, but a reservation is requested.

Hyde Park Forum Brings Alumni Back to Campus as Contest Judges
As a tradition in the School of Communication Studies, the Hyde Park Forum Persuasive Speaking Contest was held on April 10 in the Kent State University Student Center Ballroom. Nine students from a variety of academic majors enrolled in the school’s Introduction to Human Communication course competed against each other to be named winner.

Registration Opens for Third International Conference on Information and Religion
The Center for the Study of Information and Religion (CSIR) at Kent State University will host its Third Annual International Conference on Information and Religion on June 19-22 in Charlotte, N.C., in conjunction with the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) 2013 Annual Conference. Brodie to Host American Library Association Youth Media Awards Jan. 28
On Monday, Jan. 28, at 8 a.m. Pacific Time (11 am Eastern time) in the Washington State Convention Center, the 2013 ALA Youth Media Awards will be announced. Creative Outreach Grant for Teachers and Librarians -- Up to $1,000 to be Awarded
Applications are now being accepted for the Annual Virginia Hamilton and Arnold Adoff Creative Outreach Grants for Teachers and Librarians. Two grants up to $1,000 each will be given. One grant will be given to a teacher and another to a librarian for proposals to develop new classroom or library programs that raise awareness of multicultural literature among young people, particularly but not exclusively through the works of Virginia Hamilton. Kent State’s Online PR Graduates Highlight Academic Success, Convenience and Diversity
For some students graduating from Kent State University on Saturday, Dec. 15, their walk across the stage at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center will be their first time actually stepping foot on campus. On that day, 16 students from around the country graduate from Kent State’s online master’s degree concentration in public relations. Many of them are traveling to Kent to celebrate their achievement as inaugural graduates of the two-year, completely online degree program.

The Museum Origins course offered by the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University has extended to April 1 the deadline for applications for the eight-week, summer 2013 class, which includes two weeks in Florence, Italy, visiting museums and learning about the collectors and collections from which they evolved. SLIS Student Pursues Degree While Teaching in Spain
Kent State University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) graduate student Christina Booth believes that everyone should be required to travel and live in a foreign country for at least six months before graduating high school or college. The learning experiences you gain from living abroad are priceless, she said. Booth speaks from personal experience, having visited or lived in several different countries. This year she is teaching English as a Foreign Language at a public school in Spain, while also working on her M.L.I.S.

Cristobal Urbano is a visiting scholar from Barcelona, Spain. He teaches at the University of Barcelona where his expertise is library and information science (“information and documentation” as it is called in Spain), with particular interest in information sources and services. After graduating from Kent State’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS), Laurence Skirvin, M.L.I.S ’11, became the third person in his family to pursue a career in library and information science.

Four Kent State Students Earn $3,000 Scholarships
Six area college students were selected for scholarships in memory of longtime Akron Beacon Journal editor John S. Knight and public relations professional Ludel Sauvageot. A seventh student has received a scholarship from the Akron Press Club. This year Kent State students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication earned four of the seven coveted $3,000 scholarships.

Kent State SLIS faculty receive federal grant for $219,000+ to improve access to digital resources
Two faculty members in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University, Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Karen Gracy, Ph.D., have received a National Leadership Grant in the amount of $219,386 from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The funds will be used to help improve access to digital resources within and beyond the library world through what is known as “Linked Open Data (LOD).”

International Storytellers Take on China

Media Advisory re: TV Coverage of 40th Anniversary of May 4
Kent State University is providing a series of live uplink coverage opportunities to network outlets and local television stations to assist in coverage of this year’s 40th anniversary of the May 4, 1970, incident in which four Kent State students were killed and nine wounded by Ohio National Guardsmen during a Vietnam War protest. The events of May 4 played an important part in the civil rights and anti-war movement. May 4’s significance in American history was further confirmed when the May 4 site was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, a remarkable achievement for a site that is less than 50 years old.

Three Kent State University students earned top honors in the annual Hyde Park Forum held Tuesday, April 6, in the Kent Student Center Ballroom.
