Kent State to welcome luxury lifestyle publisher during lecture series

Bill WehrmanWriting for the luxury lifestyle niche has become an entrepreneurial endeavor in the publishing world. To share his secrets of success with Kent State students, Bill Wehrman, group publisher and chief operating officer of the Palm Beach Media Group in Palm Beach, Fla., will speak at Kent State University as part of the Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series in September.
 
Wehrman will discuss “News for You: Observations and Lessons Learned in the Journey from Investigative Reporter to Media Entrepreneur” at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 in the Kiva in the Kent Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.

About the speaker

Wehrman oversees 10 magazine titles and three websites. The company’s flagship monthlies Palm Beach Illustrated and Naples Illustrated are targeted to the luxury lifestyle industry.

Wehrman has been a part of the media business his entire career. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, he began on the editorial side. While working for CBS, he was named a Stanford University Professional Journalism Fellow (now the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship Program). During six months of study at Stanford's Palo Alto, California campus, he discovered an interest in business.

Upon his return to CBS, Wehrman decided to combine his love for words and pictures with his interest in business. He left CBS and started a newspaper company in Durango, Colo., then a magazine company in Kansas City, Mo. He sold both businesses but kept his hand in the media business with an advertising agency for three years before jumping back into the magazine business with both feet. Wehrman launched eight magazines in three years in local and regional markets in six states while Group Publisher for ABARTA MEDIA, where he established a central design and production, business and sales management hub to serve magazines in Dallas, Denver, Kansas City and other markets. He is passionate about the magazine business and has hands-on experience in every aspect of it.

Wehrman was Group Publisher of Primedia’s "Gardens and Gems" division when the company was the nation's third-largest magazine publisher. He operated six national magazines, their websites, custom publishing projects and other business lines based in Boston.

He has devoted much of his time in the magazine business to developing outstanding advertising sales organizations. He sees "driving revenue" with talented, organized, trained and effective sales people as the key to being able to produce magazines that editors and designers want to work on, and readers don't want to miss.

Wehrman and his wife, Eleanor, live in North Palm Beach, Fla. They have three grown children.

The Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series is made possible by a generous gift to Kent State from David “Max” and Cecile “Cil” Draime, in memory of their friend Thomas Schroth. Their vision brings distinguished professionals in architecture, visual art, music, theatre and dance to the university to share interdisciplinary experiences with students, faculty and the community.

Thomas Schroth spent his life in Niles, Ohio, as a prominent architect and inveterate collaborator in the artistic life of the Mahoning Valley and Northeast Ohio. A world traveler, he saw human creativity as a window framing human experience. The Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series brings diverse views through that window to the Kent campus and community.
