Energy Management, as a University entity, was created in 1993. With an 11 million dollar annual budget, Energy Management is responsible for utilities such as electricity, water, sewer, storm water, natural gas, fuel oil and steam. This office ensures that the energy dollars utilized to provide for the University community are used as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. This is done through energy conservation, education, purchasing strategies, sophisticated building automation systems and other new technologies, such as motion sensors, demand management strategies, lighting retrofits, programmable thermostats, etc.

Kent State has been an effective leader in terms of energy-related savings and programs. Energy Management  is currently a member of the U.S. EPA Energy Star and Green Lights Program. The University has been cited as the leader in the State of Ohio by the Board of Regents (a governing body for colleges in the State of Ohio), awarded with the Energy Efficiency Award from Ohio Edison and, most recently, the Governor's Award for Excellence in Energy. Energy Management continues to promote conservation through advertisement in student publications. Kent State University remains a leader in the industry regarding building automation systems.
