Emerging Technologies

While emerging technologies now being developed and commercialized may result in useful applications, they can also have serious negative social, environmental and political consequences. That's why emerging technologies need precautionary assessment, regulation and oversight – including those that are fast tracked and marketed as "techno-fixes" or "green" panaceas to climate change and other crises.

CSF and WML focus on developments in three emerging and converging technologies in particular:

Nanotechnology – the creation and commercialization of tiny bits of matter (a nanometer is one billionth of a meter)
Synthetic biology – the design, manufacture and release of artificially created DNA
Geoengineering – intentional, large-scale climate manipulation through a range of methods

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is accepting Letters of Intent from researchers for projects to identify and develop safer, more effective treatments for patients with blood cancers.

Through the Quest for Cures initiative, LLS, in partnership with biopharmaceutical company Celgene, will award two-year grants of between $200,000 and $400,000 a year for research projects that have a measurable impact over the next five to ten years on the diagnosis or treatment of patients with hematologic malignancies. Additional funding may be available for projects that have demonstrated exceptional progress in the initial two years.

Specifically, the initiative will award grants in the following priority areas:

Tumor cell clonal heterogeneity: This grant will support researchers seeking novel approaches for measuring and monitoring clonal heterogeneity and assessing its contribution to the response or resistance to therapy.

New molecular stratification mechanisms: Recipients of this grant will work to identify key subsets of patients with B-cell malignancies to help predict which patients will have poor outcomes from current standard therapies so they may be directed to alternative therapies.

Bone marrow and lymph node microenvironments: Researchers will seek to enhance the understanding of the role that the bone marrow and lymph node microenvironments play in either responding to or resisting therapy.

Applicants must hold an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree, and work for a domestic or foreign nonprofit organization, such as a university, a college, a hospital, or an academic laboratory. Applications may involve multiple institutions, but the applicant should have an independent research or academic position and his/her academic institution will be responsible for signing off on all terms of the grant agreement.

Letters of Intent must be submitted by June 3, 2013, through LLS's Proposal Central Web site. If the LOI is approved, applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by July 15, 2013.

National Geographic Society Offers Environmental Research Grants

Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration offers grants for conservation and education programs promoting sustainable use and preservation of the Earth. The funding efforts support cutting-edge programs that might be overlooked by other organizations. Applicants are expected to have Ph.D.'s or other advanced degrees. Funding is not restricted to U.S. citizens. Grants of up to $20,000 are available. Each year, about 250 grants are awarded. National Geographic Society grants may not be used for indirect costs, overhead and other expenses not directly related to the project. Fringe benefits are also excluded, as are salaries. Further, funds may not be used for travel to scientific/professional meetings or conferences, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of permanent field stations, or publication of research results. The committee strongly encourages applicants to seek additional, concurrent funding from other funding agencies. Committee grants tend to act as seed money and are given for one year.
