Blue Heron

Our Curriculum Focus

Inspired by our study of the Reggio Emilia approach, we have constructed an educational program that extends our understanding of developmentally appropriate practices and has these key elements and values:

  • Individuality of each person within the group
  • Participation as a right and an expectation
  • Inquiry and critical thinking embedded in daily practice
  • Learning as a journey of the mind and the heart

The contexts for learning are both inside and outside the school.  The meadow near the school serves as a laboratory for research by the children and their teachers.  Many wonderful discoveries occur daily, including that of an elusive blue heron.   These experiences are then returned to the classroom as children symbolically represent their discoveries and ideas with multiple media.
