CIIE Supports International and Intercultural Conferences

In March and May, 2005, CIIE hosted ten Turkish women leaders for a ten-day training in Leadership and Democracy.  This project, sponsored by the US State Department Bureau of Cultural Exchange, also funded two three-day conferences on Women's Leadership in a Development in Sanliurfa and Mardin, Turkey. Over 50 women and men from southeastern Turkey attended these conferences held on International Women's Day, March 8.

 

In May 2005, CIIE hosted the inaugural meeting of the riparian countries representatives for the Euphrates Tigris Initiative for Cooperation.  This water based development cooperation was co-sponsored by University of Oklahoma.  Scholars from Iraq, Syria, and Turkey launched this new initiative.  Dr. Olcay Unver, Distinguished Visiting Scholar from Turkey, provided leadership for this important regional project.

 

May 4-7, 2005, CIIE co-sponsored the Fourth Biennial International Conference of the International Academy for Intercultural Research.  The conference coincided with the 35th anniversary of the shootings that occurred on the campus of Kent State University on May 4, 1970, and had as its general theme, Conflict, Negotiation and Mediation across Cultures.  Over 250 scholars from 19 countries attended the conference.   

 

      In the summer of 2004, CIIE co-sponsored with Kenyatta University an early childhood conference, Literacy for Nation Building in Kenyatta, Kenya. Keynote address was provided by Associate Dean Dr. Kenneth Cushner, with presentations by Dr. Richard Ambrose, Dr. Wendy Sherman, Dr. Bev Bruneau, Dr. Andrew Gilbert, Sheri Leafgreen  and David Wojnowski. 

 

      May 2004, CIIE and Bahcesehir College co-hosted three conferences on Best Practices in Teaching and Learning for Teacher, Administrators and Parents in Bursa, Ankara, and Istanbul for parents, private and public teachers, education professors, and Ministry of Education personnel.  Presenters included Dr. Andrew Gilbert, Dr. Janice Kroeger, Dr. Joanne Kilgour Dowdy, Dr. David Keller, Dr. William Wilen, Dr. Wendy Kasten, and Linda Robertson from Kent State University as well as Fulya Gorgulu, Hande Ozurk, and Monique Hird from Bahcesehir College in Istanbul. 

 

     Since 1992, the CIIE has provided keynote speakers for the annual University Teaching Conference (UTC), a regional event hosted by Kent State University. Speakers for the UTC have included academic luminaries such as Dr. Stephen D. Brookfield, an educational theorist at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., and Dr. Molefe Asante, a specialist in African American Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia.      In 2003, the CIIE, along with the University of Bahcesehir GAP Cooperation Center (Istanbul, Turkey) and Southeastern Anatolia Regional Development Project (Republic of Turkey) cooperatively held a three-day International Intercultural Training Workshop in Gaziantep, Turkey. Participants in the international conference were from the Sudan, Syria, Libya, Serbia, and Turkey. 

 

     In 2002, the CIIE, along with the University of Bahcesehir GAP Cooperation Center (Istanbul, Turkey) and Southeastern Anatolia Regional Development Project (Republic of Turkey) co-sponsored an Intercultural Training Workshop and Conference in Istanbul, Turkey. This workshop was co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Sweden. 

 

     In 2001, CIIE was a key collaborator with the Educational Management Association of South Africa in sponsoring the annual conference. Under CIIE support, Kent State University President Dr. Carol Cartwright and Executive Director Dr. Kenneth Cushner presented keynote addresses.   Additionally five faculty members and doctoral students also spoke at this conference, and met with university and Ministry of Education officials in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.  Drs. Cartwright, Cushner and Steve O. Michael are honored by EMASA for their contributions to the association.

 

     In 1999, CIIE hosted the Inaugural Conference of the International Academy for Intercultural Research held at Kent State University. Dr. Kenneth Cushner serves on the executive board of this Academy.
