Barbara Hugenberg's research interests include organizational cultures, sports fans as organizational stakeholders, communication education, popular culture and political communication.

Dr. Hugenberg coordinates the basic communication course, COMM 15000 - Introduction to Human Communication. She coordinates the annual Hyde Park Forum public speaking contest. She is active with the National Communication Association, the Central States Communication Association, and the Popular Culture Association. She has presented papers and published in the areas of communication education, organizational communication, and sports fandom. She has co-edited all ten volumes of Teaching Ideas for the Basic Communication Course, and she serves on the Nominating Committee for the Basic Course Division of the National Communication Association. She serves as a manuscript reviewer for the Basic Communication Course Annual.
