The Master of Arts degree is designed primarily for those wishing to enhance their professional careers or teach at the secondary or junior/community college level. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis options. Master's students are required to complete a comprehensive course of study with a minimum of 32 semester hours of coursework, including a thesis project.

Applicants for the M.A. program should meet the following requirements for unconditional admission:

• a minimum 3.00 undergraduate GPA (on a 4.00 scale) (recommended GPA is above 3.30),
• an undergraduate major or minor in communication,
• satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (recommended combined score of 1000),
• 3 superior letters of recommendation from those in the position to evaluate academic performance and graduate potential (at least 2 of these from current or former professors),
• academic goals compatible with the focus of the School's graduate program.

International students must also achieve a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL exam.

All new graduate teaching assistants must complete COMM 65794 (Teaching of College Communication) in their first Fall Semester.
