Masters Program

Image of graduate students, Justin, Tiffany, Song taking a break between classes.The Master of Arts degree is designed primarily for those wishing to enhance their professional careers or teach at the secondary or junior/community college level. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis options. Master's students are required to complete a comprehensive course of study with a minimum of 32 semester hours of coursework, including a thesis project.

Applicants for the M.A. program should meet the following requirements for unconditional admission:

  • a minimum 3.00 undergraduate GPA (on a 4.00 scale) (recommended GPA is above 3.30),
  • an undergraduate major or minor in communication,
  • satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (recommended combined score of 1000),
  • 3 superior letters of recommendation from those in the position to evaluate academic performance and graduate potential (at least 2 of these from current or former professors),
  • academic goals compatible with the focus of the School's graduate program.

International students must also achieve a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL exam.

     COMM 65020   Quantitative Research Methods in Communication
     COMM 65652   Theories of Communication

All new graduate teaching assistants must complete COMM 65794 (Teaching of College Communication) in their first Fall Semester.
