Communication Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships and awards are one way we recognize the hard work and dedication of the students and faculty in the School of Communication Studies. We're dedicated to your success and helping you finance your degree is one way we can empower you. Find out how your academic performance could help you pay for school.

All applications are due by March 1 of the year they will be awarded. Please submit the completed application and include any other information required by the specific scholarship you are applying to. All scholarships require two letters of support.

Please carefully read the description and criteria for each scholarship and apply to only those you meet all eligibility requirements. Available scholarships and awards ae listed below.

A committee of faculty members and an additional representative chosen by the director of the school will choose the award recipients each year.

Recipients will be recognized at the school's Recognition Reception to be held each April.

All of our scholarship award recipients need to fill out a SODA (Student Online Donor Acknowledgment From) before the funds will be released to their bursar's account. Students an access the form here: https://www.kent.edu/financialaid/student-online-donor-acknowledgment-form.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Michael Dubetz Endowed Scholarship

The Michael Dubetz Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a junior communication studies major exhibiting strong leadership and personal achievement.

The scholarship will be awarded annually.

The recipient will receive a scholarship to be used the following academic year.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Junior communication studies major
  • Earned cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 minimum
  • Exhibited strong leadership and personal achievement

The Feezel Family scholarship for Global Studies

The Feezel Family Scholarship for Global Studies is awarded to a junior or senior communication studies major participating in a Kent State sponsored study abroad program.

The scholarship will be awarded annually.

The recipient will receive a scholarship to be used the following academic year.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Junior or communication studies major participating in a study abroad program
  • Earned cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 or higher
  • Demonstrated financial need through the FAFSA form
  • Describe interest in intercultural communication on application

Garmon-Murvay Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a student with junior standing (60 credit hours) and a G.P.A. of 3.0.

The recipient will receive the scholarship for use the following academic year.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Communication studies major with junior standing
  • At least one year left to complete
  • Strong academic performance, motivation, character, ability and potential
  • Submit a letter of application answering the following questions:
  1. How being a student at Kent State has influenced him/her in his/her view of the world beyond Kent, Ohio.
  2. The importance of communication studies as a discipline, especially when considering gender communication and cultural communication in a diverse and changing world.
  3. Indicate if the student is a first generation student to attend college.

Lawrence W. Hugenberg Memorial Award

The Lawrence W. Hugenberg Memorial Award is awarded to the undergraduate the school believes has achieved the utmost growth and development since the beginning of their entry into the Communication Studies program.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be an undergraduate communication studies major
  • Exhibit growth and development since his/her entry into the program

Nancy E. Mitchell Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes students who have chosen to balance the requirements of academic study with efforts to make a meaningful contribution in service to others. Throughout their college careers, these students have established a sustained record of academic excellence; maintained a consistent record of active involvement in service to their campus and/or community; and provided effective leadership for organizations or groups engaged in service activities.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be a junior communication studies major
  • Have earned a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 minimum and a 3.25 in communication studies
  • Have exhibited strong leadership and active involvement in community service.

Pierce Memorial Award

Each spring the School of Communication Studies recognizes a senior communication studies major who has shown outstanding service to the school.

The Pierce Memorial Award will be awarded annually.

The recipient will receive a book chosen by the student.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Senior communication studies major
  • Exhibited strong academic performance, motivation and character. This scholarship is given to a communication studies major who exhibits strong scholarly effort and/or service during their time at Kent State University.

Rebecca & Alan Rubin Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a student that shows strong academic performance, motivation, character, ability and potential.

The Rebecca & Alan Rubin Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually. 

The recipient will receive the scholarship for use the following academic year.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Communication studies major
  • At least one year left to complete
  • Strong academic performance, motivation, character, ability and potential

School of Communication studies Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is presented to students who exhibit strong scholarly effort and/or service during their time at Kent State University.

Arnold and Dorothy Danes Book Scholarship

The scholarship is intended for a global communication student who has demonstrated academic excellence and an interest in being a citizen of the world through knowledge and action. It is given in memory of Arnold and Dorothy Danes, who were first-generation Americans with a passion for Kent State University and the world.

Top Scholar Award

This award is given annually to the communication studies major graduating in May with the highest grade point average. The recipient will receive an engraved gift and a plaque with the names of the recipients is hung in the communication studies department. Applications are not necessary for this award.

Hyde Park Forum

Every student enrolled in COMM 15000, Introduction to Human Communication, during the current school year is eligible to compete in the Hyde Park Forum. Students are required to submit an electronic copy of their Persuasive Speech Outline, References and Cover Sheet.

Judges for the final round of the competition include area business, education and political leaders. Winners receive monetary prizes and public recognition at the school’s annual Honors Week Awards Celebration that takes place each spring semester. A plaque with the names of the recipients is also displayed in Taylor Hall.

Graduate Scholarships

D. Ray and Susanne E. Heisey Endowed International Scholarship Fund

The D. Ray and Susanne E. Heisey Endowed International Scholarship Fund is given to encourage international students who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, the motivation to achieve these goals, and the initiative to seek opportunities to further their progress. Eligible students must have come directly from his/her native country to enrolling as a student in communication studies, have a master’s level gpa of 3.2 or higher and demonstrated financial need. This scholarship has typically paid one or two students $500 each.

Dominic Infante Communication Scholarship

Dr. Dominic Infante Communication Scholarship will be awarded to a student for the second year of the Master of Arts program in the School of Communication Studies who is judged by the graduate faculty as being on schedule for completing the master’s degree and who appears to be a good prospect for matriculating into the Ph.D. program. This scholarship typically pays $700-$800.
