Researcher Explores the Role of the Victim in Elder Abuse, and Earns Top Conference Paper Mei-Chen Lin, associate professor and graduate coordinator in the School of Communication Studies at Kent State University, recently earned the top paper and will be presenting at this year’s International Communication Association’s 63rd Annual Conference this June in London, England. Lin’s paper, “Problematic family interaction: A communication of elder abuse and neglect was named top paper in the Division of Instructional and Communication Development.

Team of Students Raise $1,015 for Wounded Warrior Project On April 19, 2013, Team Civilians for Warriors set up a Warrior’s Challenge obstacle course event on Kent State University’s May 4th Memorial Field, where the participant teams took to the field to participate in relays, tug-of-war challenges, and a memory game.

Hyde Park Forum Brings Alumni Back to Campus as Contest Judges As a tradition in the School of Communication Studies, the Hyde Park Forum Persuasive Speaking Contest was held on April 10 in the Kent State University Student Center Ballroom. Nine students from a variety of academic majors enrolled in the school’s Introduction to Human Communication course competed against each other to be named winner.

Online Tools can Lessen Depression in Stroke Victims and Caregivers, Research Finds A recent research study on stroke victims and their caregivers suggests that a web-based intervention, using video conferencing and educational tools, can help caregivers better understand the emotional needs of stroke victims, and potentially alleviate both parties’ risk of depression. Nichole Egbert, Ph.D., associate professor in the School of Communication Studies was a member of the interdisciplinary team that developed the intervention.

Ewoldsen, Ph.D., a pre-eminent communication scholar on how our perceptions of the world are shaped by media images and messages, will present the Summer Scholar Seminar at Kent State University. College of Communication and Information Sadly Loses One of Its Own D. Ray Heisey, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus and Director Emeritus of Communication Studies at Kent State University, died May 20, 2011, at University Hospitals, Cleveland (Ohio), after a three-month battle with thyroid cancer. He was 79.

CCI Launches Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program The interdisciplinary doctoral program in the College of Communication and Information at Kent State University provides students with a broad scope of knowledge in communication and information science. The curriculum begins with core courses, then becomes more specialized to fit each student’s individual needs and interests.
