Graduation: Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the ceremony last?

Though the time varies depending on the length of speeches, it is safe to anticipate an hour and half.

What is the dress code for graduation?

Most female students wear a dress or skirt and blouse. Most male students usually wear shirt and tie. Guests' dress code should be dictated by the solemnity of the occasion.

Can I keep my cap and gown?

No, they are rented.  You will return your cap and gown soon as possible after the ceremony, but will have a short time to take pictures with family and friends.  Special hooders need to return their regalia following the ceremony, as well.

Are diplomas presented at the commencement ceremony?

Yes. You will receive a ceremonial diploma cover on stage.  Following the ceremony, you will exchange all regalia for your official diploma.

What can keep me from graduating?

There are a few things that can keep any student from receiving a diploma and/or participating in the ceremony: (1) failure to adhere to requirements as specified by the respective dean's office, (2) failure to pay any balance that is owed to the College, and (3) outstanding obligations or fines (including overdue library materials) not secured before graduation.

When should my family and friends get to the ceremony?

Doors will not open until 1:00pm for general seating; please ask guests not to attempt to enter before.  Our services begin on time.  For guests arriving late, seating areas will re-open at an appropriate break after the beginning of the ceremony.

Can my guests take pictures and/or videotape the ceremony?

Cameras which are hand-held, battery powered and operable from the guest's seat are permitted.   Guests may not stand in the aisles or in any other location within the auditorium for photo opportunities.  Guests who cause a hazard, nuisance or obstruct the view of others may be asked to desist or ejected by security.

What is proper "etiquette" when attending Commencement?

Commencement is a dignified event, fitting for the accomplishment you or your loved-one has achieved.   Please show respect for everyone who has come to share in the experience.  We ask that all noise-making devices (including cell phones and pagers) be turned off and that, when possible, guests remain seated during the ceremony, keeping chatter to a very minimal level.  As a courtesy to all in attendance, graduates and guests are prohibited from using horns and other noisemakers during the ceremony.  Again, this is an honorable and dignified event.

What is not permitted in the Theatre?

Strollers are not permitted in the Theatre.  No balloons, banners or signage, blow horns or noisemakers are permitted.  Such items or any other items which may cause a nuisance may be confiscated or refused at the door or on-sight.
