13th Annual Symposium on Democracy


Democracy and the American Civil War - April 23-25, 2012

Kent State University's 13th annual Symposium on Democracy will be held at the Kent campus on April 23–25, 2012. In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the nation's greatest conflict, its theme is “Democracy and the American Civil War.†Here's a look at the schedule. All sessions will be held in the Kiva.

  • Monday, April 23, 5 p.m.
    Keynote - The Civil War as an Enduring Phenomenon
    Jeff Shaara, author of Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure
  • Tuesday, April 24, 9 a.m.
    Race and the Civil War
    Mitchell Snay, Denison University, and John David Smith, University of North Carolina Charlotte
  • Tuesday, April 24, 2 p.m.
    The Civil War Home Front
    Matt Gallman, University of Florida, and Mark Grimsley, Ohio State University
  • Wednesday, April 25, 9:30 a.m.
    Reconstruction and the State of the Nation After the Civil War
    Stanley Harrold, South Carolina State University, and Fay Yarbrough, University of Oklahoma

Breakout sessions for teachers will be held following the panel discussions.

Shaara will participate in Tuesday's panel discussions. Books will be available for sale and signing by the author.

The event is free and open to the public. The symposium will also be broadcast live online via streaming video.
