Upward Bound Math/Science Bio-Scholars
The Upward Bound Math/Science Bio-Scholars is a TRiO Program funded through the Department of Education. The purpose of the program is to provide students who are first-generation college and low-income the preparation, support, and opportunities to successfully enter into postsecondary education in mathematics, science, and/or technology.
What is the Upward Bound Math/Science Bio-Scholars:
The Kent State University Upward Bound Math/Science Bio-Scholars is an ongoing partnership between the Kent State Kent and Stark campuses, Canton City & Barberton high schools, and communities to promote science and mathematics majors and careers to eligible high school students.
What is the Purpose
The Upward Bound Math/Science Bio-Scholars is a TRiO Program funded through the Department of Education. The purpose of the program is to provide students who are first-generation college bound and meet income guidelines the preparation, support, and opportunities to successfully enter into postsecondary education in mathematics, science, and/or technology.
Specific goals are to:
- Provide an exciting hands-on learning experience in the fields of science, mathematics, and technology
- Teach scientific research, understanding, and appreciation
- Teach key study skills to succeed in high level math and science courses in high school and college
- Build strong computer technology skills and knowledge
- Provide research, career, and other integrative learning experiences such as internships
Who qualifies for Participation:
63 total students from the target areas of Canton City and Barberton High Schools are invited to participate. Students must meet the following criteria:
- Currently in or rising into the 9th or 10th grade
- Expressed interest in Science, Technology, Engineering &/or Math
- Meet federal eligibility criteria
- Other guidelines as outlined in the application process
Upward Bound Math/Science Bio-Scholars Benefits:

How are Services Delivered:
There are two components to the Center – Academic Year and Summer Institute.
- Academic Year:

- Weekly Path To College meetings and workshops
- Academic support, mentoring and advising
- Parent/guardian workshops
- Field trips and campus visits
- Annual Science Day – science fair and positions papers
- Summer Institute:

- 6-week residential program at the Kent University campus;
- Students attend targeted classes in the fields of math, science, and technology
- Students participate in intensive hands-on learning experiences, laboratory work, research activities, and field trips
- Students engage in social and cultural activities designed to provide a holistic learning experience
