What were some of your biggest challenges after graduating that ended
up shaping your career?
Some of my biggest challenges wasn't like many students who are graduating in most years, where finding a job is the challenge. When I graduated, I was quickly hired by a junior high in north Dallas, Griffin Middle School; however, my greatest challenge was yet to come. I was hired, as all first-year teachers are, on probationary contract. The contract was dependent on a successful year teaching and passing the state certification exam. The year was, without a doubt, a huge success. I really enjoyed teaching; however, I didn't pass my certification exam - first or the second time. Unfortunately, I was released from my contract. Luckily, I was quickly hired by another school and again was placed on a probationary contract with the same stipulations. And again, I failed the exam; however, the school was not giving up on me. I was seen as a very valuable resource, both as a teacher and a cheerleading coach. But the toll of repeat failing attempts was beginning to wear on me. I was a good student in college, good at my job, and highly respected by my colleagues; however, I just couldn't pass the exam. The school hired a tutor, and with some pretty intense studying, I finally managed to pass the test.
I rose to the challenge, I was knocked down several times, and I conquered the test. I've used this as the backbone to my educational career. And since, I have become ESL and PE certified.
