Scholarship Recipients

Name: Katie Braun
Scholarship received: Yaro John Sojka Scholarship
Year: Sophomore
Major: Mild to Moderate Special Education
Hometown: Willowick, Ohio
Why she chose her major: In high school I was involved in sports and as a team we visited a school with children with disabilities. I enjoyed playing basketball and eating lunch with them. I felt very comfortable in that setting and decided that's what I wanted to do as a career.
Hobbies: I work at Rosie's on campus, play the guitar and listen to music.
Favorite class: Introduction to Human Communication
Name: Julie Blakeman
Scholarship: Linerode-Irmiter Scholarship in Hospitality Management
Major: Hospitality Management
Year: Senior
Hometown: Huntsburg, Ohio
Summer break job: I interned at Yellowstone National Park at Grant Village Lodge. I was a shift supervisor at the lodge, which sees 3.4 million visitors come through the area each year.
Hobbies: I work at the campus recreation center, and I like to scrapbook, hike, bike, kayak, geochaching, and playing soccer. Also, I enjoy volunteering and have participated in cleaning up the Cuyahoga Parks and helping at animal shelters.
Favorite class: Hospitality Meetings Management with Dr. Swathi Ravichandran
Future plans: I would like to work at other national and/or state park concessionaires. I previously worked for Xanterra Parks and Resorts at two different locations: Punderson Manor Lodge and Conference Center and Yellowstone National Park. Park concessionaires make an effort to be sustainable, which I appreciate because I truly love the outdoors.

Scholarship: Elizabeth Mancuso Middle Childhood Education Scholarship
Major: Middle Childhood Education

Hometown: Ravenna, Ohio
What she loves about KSU: I am a commuter student, and I love that I can be active on campus by partaking in a variety of clubs, such as Kent Student Education Association (KSEA) and Kappa Delta Pi (KDP).
Hobbies: I enjoy playing tennis and scrapbooking.
Favorite class: Block 2 with Dr. Danielle Gruhler
Future plans: I am studying abroad this summer in Florence, Italy and taking a Relational Learning class with Dr. Anne Morrison.
Name: Ashley Guittar
Scholarship: Emeriti Faculty Scholarship
Major: Speech Pathology
Year: Senior
Hometown: Austintown, Ohio
What she loves about KSU: It's the perfect place for me because it's close to home, but I'm still independent. I hold two jobs on campus - one as a student manager in Banquet Sales and the other as a research assistant. In my research assistant position I work with Drs. Sloane Burgess and Lisa Audet, and we studying autism and speech in children. I have been helping transcribe files for a qualitative study.
Hobbies: I enjoy playing volleyball, running, reading, scrapbooking and spending time with family and friends.
Favorite class: Language Disorders in Children and Adolescents with Dr. Susan Grogan-Johnson
Future plans: After graduation I would like to work in a hospital setting or an early invention center.

Scholarship: Dave Toothaker Alumni Scholarship in Physical Education
Major: Physical Education
Year: Senior
Reside: Eastport, NY
Favorite class: Adapted Physical Education with Dr. Takahiro Sato
Hobbies: I enjoy a variety of sports, including wakeboarding, running and working out.
Biggest Accomplishment: I have made the Dean's List or President's List every semester.
