Admission and Application Requirements
(All requirements due February 15, 2013)
Admission will consist of meeting application requirements for:
1. Computer Matching (on-line through D & D Digital Systems)
2. Kent State University Graduate School Program (online application)
3. Kent State University Dietetic Internship (via Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Services, DICAS)
1. Computer Matching
All applicants to the Kent State University Master of Science/ Dietetic Internship are required to participate in computer matching through D & D Digital Systems. Please go to D & D Digital System's website at www.dnddigital.com to register for the spring computer matching process. Your dietetic internship choices must be provided to D & D Digital by February 15, 2013. Please note the KSU D & D Digital Number is 211.
2. KSU Graduate School Program Application for Admission
The Application for Kent State University Graduate School is done separately from the Internship Application and must be completed on-line through Kent State University. There is a Kent State University requirement that you must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above to be considered a candidate for the Combined KSU Masters in Nutrition/Dietetic Internship Program and this requirements is strictly enforced. You can read more about the GPA requirement under the Selection Criteria section that follows.
It will be helpful to read over the following directions prior to linking to completing the application online. Links to the KSU Application to Graduate School are provided at the end of this section:
The first step toward filling out the KSU Application to Graduate School will be to create a login and pin
After creating a Login and Pin, continue to read/follow the prompts
When you are asked to select an Academic Unit, you should select Education, Health, and Human Services (EHHS)
When you are asked for the type of program you are applying for, you should select Masters
When you are asked the type of Masters, you should select MS Nutrition
Complete the rest of the "checklist" and submit payment ($30) by credit card
*Please note that you are required to complete all requirements including the KSU Graduate
Recommendation Forms (not the Academy of Nutrition + Dietetics Recommendation Forms) for the KSU Graduate School application and other application requirements as noted on the web site. 3. KSU Dietetic Internship Application Requirements
The KSU Dietetic Internship Program is participating in the Academy of Nutrition + Dietetics online Dietetic Internship Centralized Application Services (DICAS), which can be accessed at http://portal.dicas.org ; e-mail DICASinfo@Dicas.org. DICAS includes all of the requirements that in the past were submitted directly to the internship program (Letter of Application, Original Academic College/University Transcripts, Supervised Practice program Application, Three Recommendations, & an original Declaration of Intent from current undergraduate program or an original Verification Form if postgraduate status signed by an appropriate faculty.) The DICAS web site provides directions for each of the application requirements.
Your application must be totally complete by February 15, 2013. You need to begin the DICAS process as early as possible (in advance of the February deadline) so all of the required are completed and in your DICAS file and your application materials can be sent to us from DICAS.
There is no KSU Internship Application fee for the Spring 2013 match.
Students for which English is a second language are required to have a TOEFL score of 570 and must meet all of the program requirements indicated, including Declaration of Intent or Verification of Completion from an Academy of Nutrition + Dietetics/ Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)
Checklist for Kent M.S. Dietetic Internship Application Process:
(All Requirements must be totally completed by the February 15, 2013)
Register & prioritize your internship selections with D & D Digital System on-line for spring computer matching process. D & D charges a $50 fee.
Submit KSU Graduate Application on-line with $30 application fee (via credit card).
Register and complete the DICAS on-line Internship Application materials as early as possible (in advance of the February deadline) so all of the required documents are in your DICAS file by the February deadline and your complete application materials can be sent to us from DICAS. DICAS charges a $40 fee for the first application and $20 for each additional application.
In addition to being evaluated as an acceptable candidate for the KSU Graduate School, a committee consisting of Kent State Nutrition faculty will use the following criteria for determining the ranking of internship applicants that will be sent to D & D Digital for the internship selection process:
- Grade Point Average (GPA)
You must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above to be considered a candidate for the Combined KSU Masters in Nutrition/Dietetic Internship Program. As an internship candidate your overall GPA, and science GPA will be most important. GRE tests are not required for application to the KSU Graduate Program or to the KSU Dietetic Internship.
*If you do not have an overall GPA of 3.0 you may receive "conditional acceptance" into the Graduate program. This means that your application cannot be processed as an internship candidate at this point in time. However, with the "conditional" status you would have am opportunity to re-apply to the Internship program again if you complete three (faculty-designated) graduate-level courses of 9 credit hours with a grade of "B" or better in each course.
- Letter of Application
This is your opportunity to tell us about yourself and why you are applying. In addition, style, organization, and grammar are important. DICAS provides the word count limit and type of information to include.
- Recommendation Forms
Recommendations written by persons who know the applicant in an academic/ professional capacity and are specific to the applicant's qualifications are most significant. Follow the directions provided by DICAS for the recommendations.
- Work/ Volunteer Experience
Experience in the field of dietetics is beneficial, both paid and voluntary. Other experience is also reviewed and considered.
Participation in dietetics activities and leadership in on and off campus organizations are significant.
*You will be notified of your Internship match status from D&D Digital systems, not Kent State University. Applicant matching results will be posted on www.dnddigital.com from 6 PM Central Time, Sunday, April 7, 2013 through Monday, April 8, 2013 (Notification Day).
*Applicants must accept the appointment by Tuesday, April 9 at 5 PM Eastern time or earlier in order to hold their spot (Appointment Day).
*After the computer match, you will be notified by the KSU Graduate School/College of Education Health & Human Services of your acceptance status into the Graduate Nutrition & Dietetics Program at Kent State University. If you are not matched to the KSU Dietetic Internship and are accepted to the graduate program, you will have the option to decide whether or not to begin the KSU graduate Nutrition program.
If you are matched & accept your match to the KSU Combined Masters/Dietetic Internship Program you will need to send the following ASAP:
- Declaration of Intent or Verification Statement
A hard copy of the Declaration of Intent to Complete Degree and/or CADE Minimum Academic Requirements or the Verification Statement of Completion of Didactic Program in Dietetics is required. It must be an original copy signed by the Program Director in blue ink.
- Other documents as needed will be requested from KSU Program Director upon match acceptance

Upon completion of the KSU 21-month Dietetic Internship Program, with a leadership concentration and all degree requirements, graduates will receive a verification statement documenting completion of the internship and will be eligible to complete the exam to become Registered Dietitians.
In addition, program graduates will have completed the requirements for the Master of Science degree. The Internship Program is developmentally accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutritional Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition + Dietetics.
Requirements & Schedule
The following outline represents the schedule and sequence of classes leading to a Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics and completion of the requirements for the Dietetic Internship.
Please refer to the School of Health Sciences Graduate Handbook and the Kent State University Graduate Schools Catalog for additional information such as course descriptions requirements. Refer to the Kent State University Schedule of Classes for course registration information for each semester.
Program Requirements for Master of Science/Dietetic Internship
The Kent State University Master of Science in Nutrition/ Dietetic Internship Program is completed in 43 credit hours which includes over 1500 supervised internship practice hours. The program is usually finished in 4 semesters and one summer. During the semesters, interns go to practice sites 3 days per week and to class two days per week. During the summer, interns complete a 12 week, full-time clinical experience in a hospital setting. The supervised component of the program must be completed within two years of the start of the program.
Upon completion of the 21-month program and all degree requirements, graduates will receive verification statement documenting completion of the internship requirements and will be eligible to write the registration exam to become Registered Dietitians. In addition, program graduates will have completed the requirements for the Master of Science degree and will receive the Master of Science from the University.
DIETETIC INTERNSHIP SUPERVISED PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS
Rotation Emphasis Areas: 1552 Hours
Experiences for all weeks listed include a total of 24 hours, usually M, W, F except for the Hospital Clinical Experience which is completed full-time, usually M-F for 12 weeks.
I. Community (12 weeks): 288 Hours
- Dialysis (5 weeks)
- Outpatient (4 weeks)
- School (3 weeks)
II. Business (5 weeks): 120 Hours
III. Management (16 weeks): 384 Hours
- Food Service Management (12 weeks)
- Hospital (9 weeks)
- School (3 weeks)
- Clinical Nutrition Management (3 weeks and 1 day or 10 days)
IV. Clinical (16 weeks): 576 Hours
- Hospital (12 weeks full time)
- Long Term Care (4 weeks)
V. Elective Rotations (6 weeks): 144 hours
VI. Internship Orientation: 40 hours
VII. Pediatric Seminar (2 days): 16 hours
DIETETIC INTERNSHIP SUPERVISED PRACTICE EXPERIENCES
Food Service Management - 288 Total Hours
Food Service Management is completed in 288 hours. The experiences are completed over 12 weeks during the academic semesters by working 24 hours per week. The Food Service Management experiences include the following:
- Hospital Food Service Management 216 hours (9 weeks)
- School Food Service Management 72 hours (3 weeks)
Clinical Nutrition Management - 80 Total Hours (10 days)
Clinical Nutrition Management rotations are completed in 80 hours during the academic semesters by working 8 hours per day for 10 days. The Clinical Nutrition Management experiences is usually completed in the hospital setting.
Community - 288 Total Hours
Community rotations are completed in 288 hours during the academic semesters. Interns work for 24 hours per week for 12 weeks. The required Community experiences include the following:
- Outpatient Nutrition Clinic/ WIC 96 hours (4 weeks)
- Dialysis Center, Bariatric Center, University Nutrition Outreach, or other Community-based program 120 hours ( 5 weeks)
- School Nutrition Education 72 hours (3 weeks)
Clinical Nutrition Therapy - 576 Total Hours
Clinical Nutrition Therapy rotations are completed in 576 hours during the academic semesters and during the summer. During one summer, interns work full-time at a major medical center for 12 weeks (480 hours) and complete Pediatrics, Medicine, Surgery, Critical Care, and Geriatric supervised practice experiences. Clinical dietetic rotations in Extended Care facilities are completed in 96 hours during the academic semesters. The intern works 24 hours per week for 4 weeks at an extended care facility.
Business - 120 Total Hours
Business experiences include 120 hours during the academic semesters. The intern works 24 hours per week for 5 weeks in business supervised practice experiences. The Business experience will include sales, marketing, food distribution, food delivery services, and/or other aspects of the the business sector as appropriate for the organization. Possible rotations include:

- KSU Nutrition Outreach Program
- Dietitians in Private Practice
- Wellness/Recreation Programs
- School Programs

Electives - 144 Total Hours
Interns select 144 hours (6 weeks) during the academic semester to complete elective rotations. Electives can be selected from Community options, from Business options, or from the list below. The following are possible additional optional rotations:

Thesis Option/Master's Project OptionStudents can select a Thesis Option * or a Master's Project Option **
*The thesis Option is intended for students to have the opportunity to conduct original research. Approval of a thesis proposal by the student's thesis committee is required, as is the successful completion of an oral examination conducted by the thesis committee.
**The Master's Project Option is intended for students to approach research in a more applied manner. The presentation and interpretation of original research is not required. However, approval of the intended project by the student's master's project committee is required, as is the successful completion of an oral final examination conducted by the master's project committee.
