Steps for Writing a good Proposal

  • Research agency for which you are submitting a proposal
  • Follow the guidelines laid out by the funder (i.e. font style/size, page limit, sections needed to address, budget restrictions)
  • Double-check the budget to make sure it is realistic and there are no math errors
  • Explicitly state goals, objectives, and hypotheses
  • Clearly explain the aims of the research for an audience who may be unfamiliar with your field of work/research
  • Cite the latest and most relevant research
  • Learn from experience- inquire about opportunities for feedback from funder if proposal is rejected
  • Visit Division of Research and Sponsored Programs for more information on basic guidelines for required components when submitting a proposal
