Assessments Required for Licensure

ACTFL (American Council on The Teaching of Foreign Languages)

Are you completing a licensure program for a Foreign Language (ie: Spanish, French, etc)?  You are required to take a content knowledge test and a test on your education knowledge.  Your content test will be taken through ACTFL - a system of assessing and ensuring the spoken and written language proficiency of candidates for licensure to teach world languages. Click here to access the ACTFL/LTI Web site for more information about world language tests.  See below for information about the test for education knowledge (Praxis II and OAE).

Praxis II and OAE (Ohio Assessments for Educators)

  • Licensure Requirement (not required for graduation): Candidates seeking Ohio licensure are required to pass specific assessments in order to apply for licensure. See Ohio Department of Education-Educator Preparation website for more information on assessments specific to licensure type. Taking and passing the licensure tests prior to graduation is encouraged but not required.
  • If you are completing the Speech Pathology program at the Master's level and seek the School Speech Pathology license, you will continue to take the Praxis II test Speech-Language Pathology (0330 and 5330) regardless of date that you take the assessment.
  • If you are completing the Audiology program and seek the Audiologist license, you are required to pass Praxis II test Audiology (0342).
  • If you are completing the School Psychology program at the Master's level and seek the School Psychologist licensure, you are required to pass both Praxis II test School Psychologist (0401) and the domain specific School Psychology Ohio Assessment for Educators test.

SLPI (Sign Language Proficiency Interview)

Are you completing a licensure program for ASL, Deaf Education, or Ed Interpreting?  You are required to take a content knowledge test and a test on your education knowledge.  Your content test will be the SLPI, which is intended to be an evaluation of your final ASL skills, after completion of most of your coursework, to document your ASL levels for future employment needs. Students are required to pass at the Intermediate level or above. Complete the testing prior to student teaching/advanced practicum and give a copy of your results page to your faculty advisor, and 304 White Hall. TPA (Ohio Teacher Performance Assessment)

edTPA is an assessment process designed by educators to answer the essential question: "Is a new teacher ready for the job?" Ohio is one of twenty states participating in a consortium to develop a National Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) for preservice teachers. This assessment of student teaching performance is designed to measure the candidate's knowledge, skills and ability, including demonstrating his/her ability to appropriately instruct students. Candidate performances are scored by trained assessors against one or more rubrics that describe levels of performance relative to each task/activity.
