Math Students Learn to Count on Local Law Enforcement With Visit From Canine Celebrity

Posted Sept. 27, 2010

Students in Dr. Jay Jahangiri's mathematics classes at Kent State University at Geauga received more than the math lessons they signed up for when two special guests visited the campus on the first day of classes. Jahangiri invited Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland and his K-9 colleague, Midge, to visit two core math classes. Jahangiri had correctly calculated that the visitors would have numerous lessons to impart to the students, as the cop and the canine demonstrated the skill of teamwork and the value of training in the more unique facets of law enforcement.

The students gather to meet Midge.

Midge, Sheriff McClelland's colleague and a member of the K-9 unit of the Geauga County Sheriff's Office, is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Rat Terrier. Midge weighs only eight pounds and is certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's smallest police dog, but she packs quite a punch when it comes to finding drugs. Despite her tiny size - armed with a lethal nose and killer credentials - Midge really can put the bad guys behind bars. Midge has become an international celebrity with television appearances across the United States and beyond. Her appearances include the Rachael Ray Show, Fox and Friends, CNN, MSNBC, Geraldo at Large, Inside Edition and many others.
