Research and Other Sponsored Programs 40 years ago
A look back at old annual reports reminds us how close (and perhaps small in number) the university faculty members were 40 years ago, as faculty researchers were listed only by surnames. A sampling of "supported research" in 1963-4 included: Prof. Wilber $3,272 from the Scientific Advisory Council to Licensed Beverage Industries Inc. for study into the mechanism of alcoholism production in the guinea pig; Prof. Brown $13,903 from the National Advisory Health Council to investigate structure of liquid crystal cells; Prof. Krause $500 from the American Philosophical Society for preparation of manuscript for the book, Mark Twain as Critic; Profs. McGrath and Silvidi, $25,150 from NSF for study of a two-proton system by nuclear magnetic and quadrupolar resonance methods; Prof. Thomas $6,440 from NIMH for variables in the study of response generalization; Prof. Golding $2,690 from the Portage County Heart Association to study the effect of physical work on cholesterol and other blood lipids; Prof. Barbe $3,500 from the Ohio Dept. of Education for a follow-up study of highly gifted Ohio high school graduates; Profs. Saneholtz and Keiser $1,000 from the American Home Laundry Manufacturing Association for an annotated bibliography for laundry research; and Prof. Morrow $500 from Tuchman and Canute, Architects for design and supervision of execution of a ceramic tile wall for the rotatorium of Akron's FirestoneHigh School. We acknowledge the benefits we have today from knowledge gained and other accomplishments of these, and myriad other University projects, pursued by our faculty, co-investigators, staff and students in years past.
