OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
We are proud that KentStateUniversity is fourth in the nation for the number of startup companies formed per $10 million of research. The creativity of our faculty, staff and student inventors leads not only to patentable inventions for useful products and processes, but can inspire and ignite new businesses and economic development important to Ohio and the nation. In appreciation of the creativity of KentState inventors, on Feb. 11, 2004 the Office of Technology Transfer hosted a first-ever Inventor Recognition Ceremony. President Cartwright was the guest speaker at a private inventor reception that recognized the research and innovation achievements of 72 university inventors. Each awardee received a memento to commemorate their achievements. President Cartwright, Provost Gaston and Vice President John West presented awards to the inventors.
In an effort to further invigorate the entrepreneurial spirit on campus and in this area, the Office of Technology Transfer kicked off an Entrepreneurial Speaker Series. The firstguest speaker was Ray Leach, who spoke on the topic of “New Ideas for Entrepreneurship in Northeast Ohio.” The lecture, open to the community, was presented to a packed house. The next event, held in fall 2004, continued on the topics of entrepreneurship, innovation and high tech commercialization. Stay tuned for upcoming installments in this ongoing series.
One area of constant evolution is our Office of Technology Transfer web site, which has a new design and enhanced features. Faculty, staff and outsiders can now download forms, view abstracts of our technologies, view full versions of our patents and communicate questions/comments to our office. We are also working on a feedback form and auto-e-mail alert of new technologies. We invite you to check it out at www.techtrans.kent.edu.
The Office of Technology Transfer in tandem with Research and Graduate Studies will be sponsoring any KentState entrants to the Nanotechnology Business Idea Competition. Applicants are seeking “big money for small ideas.” First place brings $50,000 toward advancing your idea to ultimately be commercialized. We are proud to sponsor entrants to this competition as part of our commitment to innovation, commercialization, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
