ESL Courses 

The ESL Center offers a unique, intensive language program with a variety of classes that are designed to complement each other as well as provide in-depth English language instruction. Most classes are taught at five different proficiency levels: high beginning, low & high intermediate, and low & high advanced. There are two kinds of classes: "Core classes" which all full-time students must take, and "Elective classes" which students are welcome to choose from provided they meet the proficiency requirements.

Core Classes

Writing

Students will learn about the process of writing and how to write several different kinds of texts/papers, for example, journal entries, essays and research papers. Available for all proficiency levels for 3 credits/3 contact hours.

Speaking & Vocabulary

Students develop oral communication skills. Emphasis is placed on building vocabulary, speaking and conversation skills. Available for all proficiency levels.

Reading

Students are taught to improve their reading skills by developing micro skills such as making inferences, finding and understanding main ideas, summarizing and using context to improve comprehension, etc. In addition, students will explore ideas through class discussion. Available for all proficiency levels for 3 credit hours/3contact hours.

Elective Classes

Listening

Emphasis will be placed on improving students’ listening abilities. Students will have in-depth opportunities to focus on and practice listening skills through several sources such as radio, TV, lectures, everyday speech, etc. Available for all proficiency levels.

Grammar

In this class, students learn how English phrases, clauses and sentences are built and practice structures in various communicative situations. Available for all proficiency levels.

Pronunciation

In various communicative situations, students will learn how to identify their pronunciation problems and how to focus on improving their pronunciation of entire utterances, words, or individual sounds. Available for all proficiency levels for 1 credit/ 2contact hours.

American Literature

In these courses, students learn to understand common themes in American literature as they relate to American culture. Students will explore a variety of literary forms, including short-stories, poems, folk tales and films. Eng 10261 and Eng 10262 available for elementary II and intermediate I level students; 3 credits/3 contact hours.Eng 10263 and Eng 10264 available for intermediate II and advanced I, II level students; 3 credits/3 contact hours.

American Culture

Students study various phenomena of American culture such as history, ethnic groups, music, theater, educational institutions, the development of a multicultural society and how culture and language are interrelated. Eng 10266 available for elementary II and intermediate I level students; 3 credits/3 contact hours. Eng 10267 and Eng 10268 available for intermediate II and advanced I, II level students; 3credits/3 contact hours.

English for Specific Purposes

In these courses, students develop and strengthen professional communication skills. Students will learn to analyze, adapt, adjust, research, organize, compose, edit, proofread and revise texts in their fields of specialization. Available for Intermediate II, Advanced I and II level students.
