Admissions to the Ph.D. in English
Literature, Cultural Theory, and Social Practice

Applicants for the Ph.D. in Literature should have an M.A. in English and take the GRE General Test. Applicants are strongly urged to take the GRE Subject Test. Admission to the doctoral program is based on GRE scores, letters of recommendation, a research-based writing sample, statement of purpose, and previous academic work.

Program Requirements:
  • M.A. in English or equivalent
  • 2.75 overall GPA
  • 3.00 in previous English courses
Application Procedure:

Applications must be complete by February 1 each year for admission to Fall term. Admissions are based on previous academic work, letters of recommendation, a research-based writing sample, statement of purpose, and GRE scores. The Statement of Purpose should address the applicant's "fit" with this program. Kent State University is now processing all applications online. Here is the general procedure for all applications.
