What can I do with this major?

Bachelor of Arts in English

A Bachelors of Arts (BA) degree in English offers a wide range of learning experiences. Individuals who earn a BA in English pursue careers in editing, writing, research, teaching, advertising, and public relations, among others (see Internships & Careers for English Majors). The English Major allows individuals to focus on topics of personal interest while developing a strong background in English Studies. All students take three core classes, which cover the history of English and American literatures, two courses each in three areas (Historical Courses; Genre, Cultural Studies and Literary Theory; and Writing and Language Studies), and a capstone senior seminar (see Requirements). Students are also encouraged to pursue a well-balanced liberal arts education, which can include our various minors.

In addition to courses, English majors can participate in the English Club and Sigma Tau Delta and earn various scholarships and awards. We also have an English Undergraduate Studies Center, where students can meet with faculty and each other or just relax. With over 400 majors, we also have one of the highest retention rates among departments in the University.

To make an advising appointment with Dr. Kim Winebrenner, Assistant Undergraduate Studies Coordinator, please call Mrs. Carol Fiala, English Undergraduate Study Center Secretary, at (330) 672-1707.
