Varley O'Connor

Varley O'Connor is the author of three novels, most recently The Cure, published by Bellevue Literary Press in May 2007. Her other novels include A Company of Three (Algonquin Books, 2003) and Like China (William Morrow, 1991). Her shorter prose has appeared in The Sun magazine, AWP Writer's Chronicle, Faultline: A Journal of Art and Literature, Driftwood, Algonkian magazine, and The MacGuffin. Her fourth novel, The Master's Muse, will be published by Scribner in May 2012.

Before joining the Kent State faculty, Varley O'Connor taught writing and literature at Hofstra University, Brooklyn College, Marymount Manhattan College, and the University of California, Irvine. She worked with young children on creative writing at Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn and facilitated workshops for teachers of adult literacy for the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development. She has conducted fiction workshops for the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, the Sackett Street Workshop, and the North Carolina Writers' Network. She has also worked as a professional actor in theater, film, and television.
