Shared Services Banner and ERP Training FAQ
I’ve been to training but I feel uncertain about using Banner. Can I get more training?
Training for Banner and ERP tools is ongoing, now that the ERP project is 'done' and Banner is here! The initial training got you started, but as tools are refined, you'll receive notification via e-mail about changes.
If a big system update occurs, or a completely new tool is introduced, you'll be invited to training again. Meanwhile, training is provided in many areas of ERP use every month, for new employees and for staff who have been assigned to new duties. Feel welcome to repeat a training if you wish! There's always something new to learn.
What training is provided for those who work with Student services?
- Basic Banner INB Navigation. Here you learn to work within the Banner environment in preparation for the next level of training. This class helps you transition to the new system.
- Role-Based Banner INB Training. This level focuses on the forms and processes used by employees who have responsibilities in a specific service area (for example, Admissions, Registration, graduation processing, etc.) Basic Navigation should be learned before attending advanced training. If you don't see the training you need listed, ask!
Some Banner INB functions are used by a limited number of people, and training is provided to them on-demand by the department in charge of the process. - Self-Service Training. All faculty, advisers, and student support staff should attend Banner Self Service for Faculty, and Advisors, respectively, for an introduction to this easy-to-use information tool. HR, Advancement, and Finance Self Service are also offered.
- Other ERP-related Training. Training in the use of WorkFlows, Cognos reporting, FlashCart, and other tools are available
What training is being provided for the employees who administer HR, Finance, and other areas?
The same kinds of training described above for Student services are being provided for staff and end users in HR, Finance, and Financial Aid.
I signed up for a training session. What will the training sessions be like?
With few exceptions, sessions are hands-on. The trainers provide instruction and then participants practice procedures and ask questions. Ample time is provided to get familiar with screens and procedures.
I see a session I would like to sign up for. Where do I register?
Employees can register through the Human Resources web site at www.kent.edu/hr/register.
I’m all signed up. Do I need to bring anything to the training?
Just a smile and a rested mind!
Can I go to the same one twice? Is there any limit to the number of training sessions a person can go to?
Go as many times as you need to make sure you are comfortable with the system.
Will I get any materials during the training sessions to take back with me?
Absolutely! We will not send you home empty-handed. Every participant gets a training workbook with training materials and other useful information.
How long will each session take?
Hands-on sessions are typically 3 hours of instruction with plenty of breaks!
I'm new, and I don't see my training needs listed in the seminar topics.
Contact us. Some procedures are used by a small number of people, who receive training on demand, sometimes held right in their own office!
How do I request access to a Banner tool?
Contact your departmental security administrator. If you do not know who your administrator is, ask a manager or director to direct you. You can look up your administrator at this link.
I can't get in to Banner, can I just use a colleague's ID if they allow me to do this?
Using someone else's login ID is a no-no in Banner, as it violates system security policy. Each user must log in and conduct Banner work using their own ID. Should you access Banner and find that you cannot see or do certain things, don't panic, just call the Help Desk (672-HELP) to get this corrected. If you think that anyone else knows your password, change it immediately.
