Students

No lines, No phone calls, No waiting. Students have enough to worry about
throughout their day and once Project K.E.Y.S. is completed, lines will not
be one of them. Change information at any hour of the day, schedule
classes, view your transcript - all from the student's home computer. The
Banner suite of applications will improve several processes both used by
the students and those used by the University behind the scenes to benefit
the student to ensure that each student is given the best educational
opportunity available today.

*** Updates for the Student Modules will be distributed to Students via the "Personal Announcement" section of FlashLine.

How will Banner improve student-employee processes?

A student can work in several departments and all the information is shared in one place so each department knows the status of the student-employee. Even if the student works at two different campuses, the information will still be contained in one place. Return to top.

How does the new Reciprocity policy affect student workers after Jan. 1?

After Jan. 1, KSU will only deduct the taxes from the location where
the student works. For example, if the student works at the Kent
Campus and lives in Akron, the University will deduct the 2% Kent city
Tax from their paycheck and the student will be responsible for any
taxes owed to Akron. The student will not be required to report
anything, only be aware that the University will only take out taxes
as applicable to the location where the student works. The new rules
are University-wide and applicable to every student worker. Return to top.

When a person has just enrolled in direct deposit under the new system, will the first check still come to the department as a paper check and then be directly deposited thereafter?

Yes, the first check will be a paper check and as it takes two pay cycles for the direct deposit process to go through. Return to top.

Can the system alert me if I’m not enrolled in enough hours for financial aid?

The Student team will be starting to work on the financial aid conversion in March 2007 and will be looking into functionality questions such as this one. Return to top.

Will a student-employee be able to access the Human Resources Tab?

Yes. The system is role-based and because the student is an employee, they will need access to certain HR services. Return to top.

Will student services personnel still use Hobson’s?

Yes. This project is committed to continuing the University’s use of “best-of-breed” products, and Hobson’s is a perfect fit for Kent State. The Hobson’s software will be integrated with the Banner environment in early June 2007. Return to top.

Will students be able to access workflow processes?

Banner is role-based in that only authorized people are able to access certain processes. If a student is authorized to begin, or continue a workflow, then they will have access to it from the web portal. The login also acts as an electronic signature, providing for added security. Return to top.

Will information be updated to the phone directory more easily?

Any information that is changed in Banner will automatically update those fields contained within the Kent State University directory. Return to top.

With the upgraded portal environment, can I customize my FlashLine channels?

Yes. With the new improvements to FlashLine, a student or employee can easily pick from several customized options. While some University channels cannot be changed, the user will have access to weather, news, stocks and more. Return to top.

Will I be able to access this new Banner system remotely, say, from another part of the world?

We are still looking at remote access. We know this is an important technology and we are looking at every option to make it available, while at the same time ensuring that the strictest standards for security are also available to protect vital and sensitive information. Return to top.

Will we still have to change our Flashword every six months?

This is an administrative policy of the University and not a part of Banner. Return to top.

How does Banner handle Java?

Banner uses software called a “J-Initiator” which allows Banner to interface with several different forms of Java language. Banner is much more Java-compatible than our current systems. Return to top.

Is it the portal that makes it the UDC?

Yes. It’s bringing everything you use to put it in one place. The portal unifies all the components (Banner, workflows, reporting) and implements these improvements/upgrades at the same time.

Luminis Portal is the very visible front end that everyone will see, the Unified Digital Campus is more than just the portal.  It is tying all of the University’s applications together to further the institution’s goals that makes the UDC what it is.  So, all of the ERP solutions are part and parcel of the UDC, not just the portal. Return to top.

Who is designing the vocabulary for Banner. Where do these terms come from?

For reporting in Advancement, we used what it came with. During training, every user should become more familiarized with the Banner terminology. The training team will also provide reference material and “crosswalks” so that users can look at the terms of the new environment and their relation to former processes and terms. Return to top.
