Faculty Professional Development Center
The report contained suggestions for strengthening some of these efforts, for making all efforts more broadly known and available, and for creating other opportunities as needed. The committee offered a conceptual framework for faculty professional development and recommended the creation of the Center. The report was presented to the President and to the Faculty Senate for discussion. President Cartwright and Senate Chair Robert Johnson created a planning committee to provide detailed recommendations on housing, staff, budget and reporting. In February of 1997 the planning committee submitted its report. By late August 1998 a director was appointed and in September the Center and its staff began formal operations.
The center's four main areas of service are to:
- Connect, network, and support continuity in opportunities for professional and staff development.
- Communicate opportunities for professional and staff development.
- Provide advocacy and support for professional development as members work with individual colleagues, committees, and groups to enhance opportunities for long and short-term growth.
- Offer expertise and consultation related to specific areas of scholarship and professional work.
Here are the people behind what we do here at the FPDC:
Dr. David M. Dees, Interim Director, is an Associate Professor of Cultural Foundations at Kent State University. He has been teaching in higher education for over 25 years and has spent the last 5 years working in the Faculty Professional Development Center as a Senior Faculty Associate. David has a B.S. in Communications and an M.A. in Theatre from the University of Kentucky. After earning a doctorate in Cultural Foundations of Education from Kent State University, he has spent the last decade specifically studying the aesthetic dimensions of teaching and learning, how the human brain works, and the impact that rural/Appalachian cultural has on learning in higher education. Dr. Dees can specifically provide assistance in understanding how students learn, designing and implementing scholarly projects that examine student learning, peer review of teaching, faculty mentoring, and assessment. Eve Dalton, Manager of FPDC, has been assisting faculty in the development, maintenance, and support of online and hybrid courses for 13 years at Kent State University. She has a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Fine Arts-Sculpture, an M.Ed. in Instructional Technology, and is currently a student in the Educational Psychology Ph.D. program.
Eve can provide assistance with instructional design, educational technologies (lecture capture, video editing, Prezi, MS Office, Google apps, Adobe CS, email organization, etc.), alternative assessments, flipped classroom construction, syllabi construction and much more. Nancy Krestan, Administrative Secretary, began working in the Faculty Professional Development Center as the administrative secretary in 2007. She moved to TLCS and worked directly with Dr. Mary Louise Holly on the Igniting Streams of Learning in Science STEM grant and the IDEAL project (Institutions Developing Excellence in Academic Leadership). Upon completion of those projects, Nancy returned to the FPDC part-time as the University Teaching Council’s (UTC) administrative secretary. Joshua Bird, Studio Assistant, is a Visual Communication Design student here at Kent State University. Josh has been working in the Faculty Professional Development Center for 3 years. Because of his expertise in visual design, Mr. Bird is a powerful resource for providing feedback on classroom presentation design (including Prezi, Powerpoint, and Keynote), scholarly poster design, as well as other forms of visual communication. Mr. Bird is Kent State University’s TurningTechnologies liaison and provides support for its software and student hardware. Josh also has expertise in classroom software such as Microsoft Office and the Adobe Creative Suite, social media (including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) and can provide a student perspective for anything you might be working on as a faculty member.
