Academic Advising in the Honors College
An advising appointment requires: Academic Plan |
The goal of Honors College academic advising is to help you design a different and more exciting undergraduate experience. A checklist is not an education. You have choices. How will you best use your Honors College experiences to make the most of your years here? You and your Honors advisor are partners in this learning process.
Although completing your academic program is your responsibility, you have lots of support along the way. Your Honors College advisor will assist you in how to best use your Honors experiences. Your college advisor will assist you with all the procedures in your degree-granting college. Your faculty advisor will assist you with upper division course selection and career information. Take the initiative to seek out the help that is available to you. Be an active, responsible partner in your own education.
The Honors College office is a good place to meet people, ask questions, and solve problems. In the Honors College, we offer a comprehensive advising program which spans your undergraduate experience. We really get to know you, as you will visit your Honors advisor at least once each semester. This is our opportunity to help you recognize the value of a liberal education and discuss how it will fit with your academic plan.

How do I prepare for an advising appointment?
Refer to "The Honors Advising Session: Planning for graduation from the first meeting," in the Honors College Student Handbook.
How does my Honors advisor help me?
Academic progress--Academic advising sessions are essential for pre-registration planning. Your advisor will review your Honors status, provide information about Honors scholarships and special Honors options (e.g., independent work, overseas programs), and initiate or recommend contacts with appropriate department and collegial faculty/advisors.
Academic planning--Using an academic plan, advisors aid students in appropriate planning and class selection for Honors work the next semester.
Personal interests and concerns--Your advisor will encourage and support you and initiate referrals if appropriate.
How does Honors College academic advising relate to other campus advising (e.g., collegial or departmental)? What advising do I need beyond Honors advising?
Honors College advisors are your primary resources for all questions pertaining directly to your career in the Honors College. They serve as consultants for your other academic and personal concerns and should be used in conjunction with departmental, collegial, and other appropriate University offices. Specific questions regarding your degree program (e.g., graduation checks, KAPS errors, course substitutions, etc.) must be handled by the degree-granting college. Regular conferences with your advisor in your major are especially important.
